These tragic deaths have spurred at least one engineer to look at how people are becoming trapped in the bins and how this can be prevented.

Toronto police said the woman was heard by witnesses screaming for help shortly before 2 a.m. after she became trapped in a clothing donation box behind a building near Bloor Street and Dovercourt Road.

Last week, The Canadian Press reported that seven Canadians have died in donation bins since 2015.

Residents living in the area told Canadian TV station CP24that it is not unusual for women from local homeless shelters to attempt to grab things from the charity donation bins.

Back in November 2018, a 32-year-old man was discovered in a similar position in Cambridge, Ontario. The company has been advising charities to remove those bars until safer designs can be implemented.

One manufacturer, Green Inspiration, said in an emailed statement it is replacing its donation bins throughout the Lower Mainland with a new design that does not allow "unauthorized entries" at all.

Speaking to CTV News Toronto via phone, a representative from Rangeview Fabricating Inc., the company that makes the bins, said that they have stopped making the model after last week's incident in B.C.
