Donald Trump demands $5.7 billion for steel barrier on US-Mexico border

President Donald Trump abruptly walked out of a closed-door meeting with congressional leaders Wednesday in the White House Situation Room after Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she wouldn't fund his border wall if he ended a government shutdown first.

The left called foul when every major TV network made a decision to give President Trump airtime for an address Tuesday on the border crisis - a courtesy the networks once denied to President Obama. That includes building new infrastructure and roads, installing technology to scan cars as they cross the border, and "hiring personnel to facilitate trade and immigration at the border".

Able to get the bills through the House because of the Democratic majority, Pelosi is hoping some Senate Republicans back her up and abandon Trump's wall gambit.

In their joint response to Trump's speech, Pelosi and Schumer pointed to a number of spending bills lawmakers have already passed that would reopen the government and provide money for border security.

One possible if temporary solution is individually funding parts of the government that are now without money - action that James Clyburn, a top House Democrat, said would get underway Wednesday in the Democratic-controlled chamber.

It was Mr Trump's first official address from the Oval Office.

On the 19th day of a partial government shutdown caused by the dispute over the wall, a short meeting that included Trump, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi ended in acrimony with no sign of a resolution. "It has not been approved by Congress and even if it is, there's no provision there to make Mexico pay for the wall", Stephanopoulos said.

Mr Trump said the wall is not "immoral" as he said wealthy politicians build walls and fences around their homes because they love the people on the inside, not because they hate people on the outside.

Wallace replied that it would but this would not be enough because the Democrats still won the House in the midterms with the border wall being Trump's main issue.

He said Trump "slammed the table" in frustration as he was leaving.

Mr Trump has asserted that he has the authority to build a wall without congressional approval if he declares a national emergency, but the White House hasn't explained the legal justification.

American democracy doesn't work that way. "It's also what our professionals at the border want and need", he said. We'll update with more speech numbers as they come in later, stay tuned. "Go on TV and don't say there are illegal immigrants, say there is an army of chupacabras crawling in through Tijuana", he continued. "But all Americans are hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration". He talked about drug crossings at the border but government statistics show that much of the heroin actually comes not from over the unguarded border, but through ports of call.

"This is the tragic reality of illegal immigration on our southern border", he added. "More Americans will die this year due to drugs than were killed in the entire Vietnam war", he said.
