Trump fires back at Romney

Mitt Romney will be sworn in as a United States senator on Thursday-and he makes it clear in a Washington Post op-ed that he has no intention of becoming an unquestioning ally of President Trump.

Romney claimed this all highlighted "a deep descent" for the Trump presidency.

Romney and Trump traded barbs during the 2016 presidential campaign, with Romney calling Trump a "fraud" and Trump slamming Romney's 2012 loss to Democrat Barack Obama. He later added: "With the nation so divided, resentful and angry, presidential leadership in qualities of character is indispensable". Mitt Romney wrote a scathing criticism of Trump.

Romney also said in the piece that Trump's presidency has weakened America's influence overseas, writing that "Trump's words and actions have caused dismay around the world".

Mr. Trump said he would "much prefer that Mitt focus on Border Security and so many other things where he can be helpful". Jeff Flake, a frequent critic of the president. "I've seen him play this playbook".

Trump replied by tweeting he hoped Romney wouldn't follow in the footsteps of Sen. Flake has also been on the receiving end of many of Trump's tweets for his refusal to vote with the GOP on many issues.

When he announced his run for senator, Romney appeared to take a veiled swipe at the Trump administration's immigration policies. "I hope not", Trump tweeted. It's just posturing, an empty gesture before he falls in line with the rest of the party-one that's perfectly willing to side with Donald Trump over his hollow words anyway.

Like other Big Government Republicans who never liked Reagan, Mitt Romney wants to signal how virtuous he is in comparison to the President.

Conservative co-host Meghan McCain and Abby Huntsman didn't exactly stand by Romney's op-ed, either. In 2012, Republicans upped this requirement to a majority of delegates in eight states, to prevent then-Texas Congressman Ron Paul from challenging Romney at the convention, but restored the original plurality-in-five threshold in 2016 after the tougher rules shut out Ohio Gov. John Kasich. He said, "So you don't choose a president based on how good they are; you choose a president based on what their policies are".

During the Cabinet meeting, Trump noted he'd endorsed Romney in his election, a nod for which Trump said Romney "thanked me profusely". The op-ed, again before he even assumed office, was published the night of New Year's Day. Answering another question, he suggested Romney's anti-Trump views are not representative of Utah voters.

"I don't think he has a real moral center", Hostin said.

"Without a doubt, rhetorically at least, the two senators are now in different places when it comes to the president", said Chris Karpowitz, co-director of the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy at Brigham Young University.
