US shutdown: Trump invites congressional leaders to border-security briefing

After digging in on border wall funding and forcing a partial government shutdown, President Donald Trump is now asking: "Let's make a deal?".

The government has been partially shut down since Congress was unable to reach a funding deal on December 21st. Republicans only hold 51 seats.

The proposal includes $1.3 billion for border security, but not the $5 billion President Donald Trump has demanded for a border wall. Sixty senators would have to vote for a measure for it to advance.

He also moved to defend himself from criticism that he couldn't deliver on the wall while the GOP controlled both the House and Senate. It was sitting over there. If approved, the bills would go to the Senate.

The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest federal employee union, representing some 700,000 workers, on Monday announced that it was suing the federal government over the shutdown, writing in a statement that "the federal government is violating the law by requiring some federal employees to work without pay during a shutdown".

U.S. Rep. David McKinley.

Trump signaled earlier this week he would not sign the bill that House Democrats plan to bring to the floor because it omits dollars for his proposed southern border barrier.

General John Kelly, who leaves the administration on Wednesday after a rocky 18-month tenure, broke with the president on key areas during an intriguing exit interview with The Los Angeles Times newspaper.

According to the Associated Press, an anonymous Democratic aide claimed that the compromise offer amounted to $2.5 billion for border security.

"It's so heartbreaking. There is more trash and human waste and disregard for the rules than I've seen in my four years living here", Snider said.

But he later argued the Democrats would be at fault if they didn't vote for border security.

"If you want to stop illegal immigration, stop USA demand for drugs, and expand economic opportunity in Central America". We have sex trafficking happening.

"I'm here, I'm ready to go. Mexico & Canada will also thrive - good for all!" the president said.

"But we left a solid concrete wall early on in the administration, when we asked people what they needed and where they needed it."

A central issue in finding a resolution could be the definition of what constitutes a wall, including the idea of steel slats and other types of barriers versus a concrete structure.

"Any way we can intercept those people who are coming across illegally or inappropriately", he said.

The plan introduced by speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer on Monday included two separate legislative actions: One combined bill to fund for the full year six of the departments that are shut, and a second to fund the homeland security department, which would oversee the border and thus the agency responsible for the wall, until February.

"I campaigned on Border Security, which you can not have without a strong and powerful Wall", Trump tweeted Monday. The wall is the only way to do it. Technology - nobody knows more about technology than me - technology is just the bells and whistles on the wall.
