Federer emerges victorious in historic mixed-doubles match against Serena Williams

On Tuesday, Roger Federer and Serena Williams, both 37, played each other for the first time in a doubles match at the Hopman Cup in Australia, according to the Associated Press.

Federer and Bencic overcame Williams and Tiafoe in the Fast4 format as Switzerland beat the U.S. 2-1 in front of a 14,000 capacity crowd.

In truth, Serena was not given the chance to show much of the doubles prowess that has seen her win 16 grand slam titles in that discipline on top of her 23 in singles.

Switzerland, who have won both of their ties, will guarantee themselves a spot in the final with victory over Greece on Thursday night.

According to tennis.com, Serena Williams will be paired with fellow American Francis Tiafoe, while Federer will play with Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.

It was billed as the battle of the sexes and it lived up to the hype - tennis' two greatest players going rally for rally in the mixed doubles in front of 14,000 fans at RAC Arena last night.

"You know I've been training offseason to be ready for Roger, so not sure how I'm going to do but we'll see", Williams said. But, considering Federer's mind-blowing tournament run in the past couple of years and Williams' heroic return to the court after almost dying during her daughter's birth, there's still a hell of play left in front of them. The two greats will be opponents for the first time in the mixed doubles.

"I was nervous returning because it's a wonderful serve and you just can't read it", said Federer in the post-match interviews.

For the first time in their decades-long tennis careers, Serena Williams and Roger Federer will play each other on New Year's Day. "It's totally normal. I've just got to rub it out".

"It was a definitely a relief", Williams said.

"I really can not imagine how".

Federer eventually clinched it for reigning champion by claiming the winning point in the truncated tiebreak used in mixed doubles with a flawless angled volley.

Williams raced to an early 3-0 lead against Bencic, but then lost her way as the Swiss number 54 gained successive breaks of serve to secure the first set.

Federer moved the British player around by crisply hitting the lines as he won five games in a row to take control of the set.

Federer was at his clinical best in his singles match, winning seven straight games at one point to set up the win. "I wasn't missing any rhythm", Federer said after his win over world No.91 Norrie.
