Car Crashes Into New Year's Crowd in Tokyo in Suspected Terror Attack

"Tonight's events will have understandably anxious people but I need to stress that the incident is not ongoing, a man is in custody and there is now no intelligence to suggest there is any wider threat at this time", assistant chief constable Rob Potts said in a statement.

A policeman (R) stands next to a roped-off crime scene after a man drove into the crowd on New Year's Eve on Takeshita Street in Tokyo's fashion district of Harajuku.

According to the announcement by the MPD, he ran into eight pedestrians - all male - with four of them seriously injured.

"I hit them with an intention to kill", Mishima said the suspect had told police.

Some media reports said the man had linked the attack to the executions in July of 13 members of the Aum Shinrikyo or Aum Supreme Truth cult, who were responsible for a 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway.

TV aired video of a small van with the entire front end smashed while emergency workers rushed to the scene.

A large tank filled with kerosene was found in the vehicle, police said.

Popular with teenagers, it runs right by Meiji Shrine in Harajuku.

One college student suffered serious injuries during the attack and was undergoing surgery, the police spokesman told AFP. Police declined to comment on reports by the Mainichi newspaper and other Japanese media that the suspect appeared to have planned to set his vehicle on fire, and said such possible motives were still under investigation.

A 25-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said, adding that two knives were involved in the attack.

The two executions in Osaka brought the total for the year to 15, the highest total since 2008.

Another 109 other people remain on death row.
