Pelosi hopes to end shutdown as Democrats take control of the House

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, a key Trump ally on some issues, met with the president on Sunday and told reporters afterward he was optimistic that Republicans, Democrats and Trump could reach a deal to end the shutdown that includes wall funding and legal status for some illegal immigrants. Montana Democrat Jon Tester, on the same program, said he prefers technology and more manpower at the border to a wall. "But always saying "wall" or "no wall" is being very disingenuous and turning a complete blind eye to what is a crisis at the border when it comes to the drugs pouring in".

"The wall has become a metaphor for border security".

"(The) President didn't commit but I think he's very open minded", Graham said, adding that Trump's first response to the plan was describing it as "interesting".

The bill will go from the Democratic-controlled House to the Republican-held Senate and from there, it would need Trump's signature.

Graham proposed to help two groups of immigrants get approval to continue living in the U.S: about 700,000 young "Dreamers" brought into the USA illegally as children and about 400,000 people receiving temporary protected status because they are from countries struggling with natural disasters or armed conflicts.

"Illegal immigrants, overwhelmingly, are not bad people".

Other Republicans this weekend kept their fire trained on Democrats, seeking to shift blame for the shutdown affecting about 800,000 federal workers.

"It's not a fence, Jeb, it's a WALL, and there's a BIG difference!" "We're going to do the responsible thing". Under this plan, it would instead get temporary funding to give both sides time to negotiate through February 8.

In case you've been asleep for the past few weeks: Trump and congressional Democrats are at an impasse regarding funds for his wall.

Democrats have said they believe investments in border security are necessary, but the idea of building a physical barrier on the border with Mexico would be a waste of money.

House Democrats are introducing a package of bills Monday that would re-open the federal government without approving funding for President Donald Trump's border wall with Mexico, establishing an early confrontation that will test the new power dynamic in Washington.

Counselor Kellyanne Conway tells Fox News Sunday that Trump is waiting for Democrats to reach out to him.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has said he will only put a bill on the floor if President Trump will support and sign it.

A White House official said Democratic Sen.

Trump is not budging, having panned Democratic offers to keep money at current levels - $1.3 billion for border fencing, but not the wall.

Trump won the cheers of his most ardent loyalists in his successful 2016 presidential campaign with his call for a solid concrete wall along the 3,200-kilometer U.S.

- Democrats win: Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer offered options to Trump during a heated Oval Office meeting on December 11, including a six-bill spending package with a stopgap for Homeland Security and a full-year stopgap spending bill for all the closed federal departments. "Now we have to do it the hard way, with a Shutdown".

House Democrats will vote Thursday, the first day of the new Congress in which they'll be in the majority, to reopen the government with six full-year appropriations bills and a short-term continuing resolution for the Department of Homeland Security, according to a senior Democratic aide.

Also, some of the West's iconic national parks are beginning to partially close as they deal with overflowing restrooms and vandals on the 10th day of a federal government shutdown. Trump has faced mounting conservative criticism for his inability to deliver on his core campaign promise.
