Officers arrest suspected California cop killer and 7 others

A suspected drunk driver accused of fatally shooting the California police officer who pulled him over was captured Friday as he tried to flee back to Mexico, where he lived before illegally crossing into the USA, authorities said.

A man suspected of killing police officer Ronil Singh has been arrested, along with seven others alleged to be involved in the case.

Christianson said Arriaga entered the country illegally, has two prior arrests for DUI and has known gang affiliations.

Christianson had initially given Arriaga's age as 33, but authorities later said he was 32.

But he would not reveal the suspect's name "until we absolutely are 100 percent certain that we have the right name", meaning the person's immigration status could not be verified.

"This suspect, unlike Ron, who immigrated to this county lawfully and legally to pursue his lifelong career of public safety, public service and being a police officer, this suspect is in our country illegally", the sheriff said.

The fatal incident happens in the midst of a partial federal government shutdown that U.S. President Donald Trump has initiated because he wants Congress to allocate $5 billion towards building a wall at the U.S. border with Mexico.

After Thursday's press conference, President Trump weighed in on the manhunt on Twitter, using it to back his argument for the border wall, which many experts agree is not an effective deterrent for migrants looking to enter the U.S.

The arrest followed a statewide manhunt.

Erik Razo Quiroz. Gustavo Perez Arriaga, the man accused of killing a California police officer who pulled him over to investigate if he was driving drunk, was captured on December 28, 2018.

There was a gunfight as Singh "absolutely tried to defend himself" but he apparently didn't hit the suspect, Christianson said. If he had been reported, Christianson said, Singh would still be alive. Cpl.

His wife, holding their five-month-old baby, stood with family while the community gathered in support. "Why aren't we proud to step up and help?" He joined the Merced County sheriff's office as a reserve officer and worked as an animal control officer in Turlock before being hired by the Newman force in 2011. We need to know who is in our communities that shouldn't be.

Richardson said his department of 12 is grieving Singh, and other agencies are lending a hand.

John Cohen, a former California police officer and undersecretary of the Department of Homeland Security during the Obama administration, said any suggestion that California's sanctuary laws prohibit local police from sharing information with ICE about violent criminals is "misleading".

Detectives also arrested Arriaga's girlfriend and another of his brothers, accusing them of helping Arriaga evade the police.

"The law, in fact, does allow that and precisely enables local law enforcement officials to work with ICE when targeting criminals and gang members in particular", said Cohen, an ABC News contributor.
