Germany's Hanover airport resumes flights after man's tarmac invasion

"Officers were able to stop the vehicle and overwhelm the man [sic]".

Airport traffic has been suspended at Hanover airport after a auto crashed through a barrier onto the runway, German police said. Reports say that the man has been detained by the police. Authorities eventually towed away the auto and searched outside the airport for other possible threats.

A Hanover police spokesperson told DW that the man in his mid-20s drove out onto the runway and followed a plane from Greece's Aegean Airlines after it had landed.

Bomb disposal experts were examining the vehicle, which police described as a routine measure.

Officials have not said whether they're treating the incident as terror related.

"Police checks of the vehicle have been completed, no unsafe objects were found. Hanover airport resumed operations at about 20:05 (1905 GMT)", Hanover police tweeted on Saturday.

Hannover Airport (HAJ) is the ninth-largest airport in Germany, handling 5.8 million passengers in 2017. At least several flights have been diverted from the airport or delayed.

The security incident took place just over a week after police said they were tightening airport security due to terrorism fears, BBC News reported.

Departures and landings of planes resumed shortly after 8:00pm (local time) after being halted for about four hours.
