US investigating CenturyLink internet outage, 911 failures

"The CenturyLink service outage is therefore completely unacceptable, and its breadth and duration are particularly troubling".

The Monroe, Louisiana-based telecommunications giant is one of the largest in the United States.

Residents of the communities in the following lists can use the 10-digit phone numbers at the top of each list to receive dispatch service from State Police, according to MEMA.

The outage began Thursday, but it affected more than just Internet customers because many USA businesses and even some regular folks, including many in Nebraska, have switched to voice-over-Internet-protocol phone systems that rely on the Internet to transmit business calls. CenturyLink has said "a network element. was impacting customer services", but has offered no further details on the cause of the outage or the number of customers affected.

According to CenturyLink's latest Twitter update, the company has restored some services across the network in the past few hours, and is still working to resolve remaining issues. It hasn't provided a cause for the problems.

CenturyLink said it "discovered some additional technical problems as our service restoration efforts were underway".

The outages apparently began Thursday morning.

King County spokesman Cameron Satterfield said systems appear to be working again, but they're still being tested to make sure everything is fixed.

Carol Capas, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, told KTAR News 92.3 FM that officials advised called who could not get in touch with emergency officials using 911 to call the administrative line at 520-432-9500.

Washington first started experiencing these new issues Friday morning at about 1 a.m., according to KOMO News.

Colorado: The nationwide outages led to dropped 911 calls in northern Colorado as well, according to The Greeley Tribune. The outage didn't spare Cheyenne, where customers lost internet and phone service.
