Ousted PM Nawaz Sharif Sentenced for Corruption

"The accountability drive and action against the corrupt will help Pakistan improve its investment climate and revenue generating ability", said veteran bureaucrat Shamshad Ahmad. According to the ordinance, a public office holder has committed the offense of corruption if the person or any of his dependents own, possess, or have any right or title in any property or pecuniary resource disproportionate to the known sources of income and when such a situation can not be reasonably accounted for by the accused.

Sharif being jailed has been cited by many as another example of the all-powerful military sidelining a popular politician who took them on.

Shortly after his conviction in the National Accountability Court's Al-Azizia corruption case Monday, Mr Sharif's counsel requested court to shift him to Lahore jail instead of Adiala since the veteran leader is a heart patient and his personal physicians and family members are stationed in Lahore.

Abbasi said the world would laugh at this verdict convicting a person without any evidence.

He said the PTI had not lodged even a single case against former president Asif Ali Zardari, but it was the last PML-N government which made all the cases against him.

The case took rigorous attendance of Nawaz Sharif, who attended the accountability court for hundreds of times, answering hard and blunt questions about his family's wealth and investments.

Defending himself, Sharif said his conscience was clear.

"A disqualification of 10 years from holding any public office is part of the sentences awarded to the former premier".

He was released in September after the Islamabad High Court suspended his sentence pending an appeal hearing. "(I) have always served the country and this nation with absolute honesty", he said while talking to senior party leaders in a special meeting in Islamabad before going to the court.

His two sons, who are now living in London, were declared absconders by the court.

Before the verdict, hundreds of Sharif supporters threw stones outside the courthouse at police, who fired teargas. He was acquitted in another trial involving Flagship Investment.

She wrote in a series of tweets Monday that the people of Pakistan were standing by her father.

"Punishment to the same man for the fourth time".

The anti-corruption court said in its ruling that the three-time prime minister was unable to prove the source of income that led to his ownership of a steel mill overseas.

Mr Sharif's lawyers said the accountability court's verdict will be challenged in the Islamabad High Court.

Supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif protest against a court ruling, in Multan, Pakistan, Monday, Dec. 24, 2018.

Irrespective of the court's decision, which is being seen as controversial, the verdict will have far-reaching implications for Pakistan's politics.

Authorities reportedly took the former premier back to jail.
