What's the latest in the probe into the murder of Khashoggi?

The Committee to Protect Journalists said the most illustrative case of a lack of global leadership on journalists' rights and safety was "the brazen murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khaashoggi" at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul by Saudi agents in October.

Reprieve Director Maya Foa said: 'Despite promises of reform from the Crown Prince, the Kingdom is executing drug offenders at an alarmingly high rate, and at least thirty people - including some arrested as teenagers - face imminent execution for exercising their democratic rights.

"The hatred of journalists that is voiced, and sometimes very openly proclaimed, by unscrupulous politicians, religious leaders and businessmen has tragic consequences on the ground, and has been reflected in this disturbing increase in violations against journalists", he wrote.

The number of journalists killed worldwide for their work almost doubled this year.

Ahead of the United States and India on the list are Afghanistan with 15 journalists killed, Syria with 11, Mexico with nine and Yemen with eight.

A total of 348 journalists were detained out of which, 179 are professional journalists, 150 non-professional journalists, and 19 media workers.

In the United States, four journalists and another staffer were killed due to their work when a gunman attacked the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Md. Two other journalists, a local TV anchor and cameraman, were killed by a falling tree while covering Subtropical Storm Alberto's extreme weather in North Carolina in May.

More journalists were killed, abused and subjected to violence in 2018 than in any other year on record, with those in the profession facing an "unprecedented level of hostility", a new report has found.

Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

The total number of journalist deaths has remained relatively steady.

The number of journalists killed on duty rose in 2018 and the number murdered in reprisal for their work doubled, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported on Wednesday.

Between June 2017 and March 2018, the number of executions in Saudi Arabia reached 133, nearly twice as many as the 67 recorded in the eight months prior to the rise of the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Fake news is the likening the conditions for journalists in Afghanistan to America.

"The most vocal head of state in Khashoggi's case has been Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose government has effectively shut down the independent media and is jailing more journalists than any other around the world for the third consecutive year", said the report by CPJ's Elana Beiser.

Twenty-seven-year-old Ján Kuciak and his fiancée were murdered in February.
