Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray is named the AP Player of the Year

Murray beat out Tagovailoa and Washington State's Gardner Minshew II for the Davey O'Brien.

"It's humbling and an honor to be named AP Player of the Year, to be mentioned in the same realm as a lot of great players, a lot of hall of famers", Murray said.

Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa, Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins and Oklahoma's Kyler Murray will attend the 2018 Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York City on Saturday night as finalists for college football's top individual award.

Murray didn't go home empty-handed either.

After the Big Ten title game, many wondered if Haskins would turn pro or remain with Ohio State.

After taking part in a little more than 30 minutes worth of interviews, Murray moved down to the floor of the stock exchange, eventually making his way with Tagovailoa and Haskins to the balcony where they rang the closing bell. The past five winners of the Walter Camp Award won the Heisman, while the past four Maxwell winners did the same. No other school has had more than two players win AP Player of the Year.

Murray has thrown at least two touchdown passes in 12 of 13 games this season, and has thrown at least three TD passes in 10 contests.

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray is adding to his trophy case. He's also rushed for 892 yards and 11 scores.

I think NBCSports may be confused, Brian.

Brian Hartline, the current wide receivers coach for the Buckeyes who played seven seasons in the National Football League, had to teach the media on Twitter about why Haskins should be the frontrunner for the award.

If Murray wins, the Sooners would become the first program to have back-to-back quarterbacks win the award and the fifth school in FBS history to have consecutive Heisman winners, joining USC's Matt Leinart (2004) and Reggie Bush (2005, though later vacated), Army's Doc Blanchard (1945) and Glenn Davis (1946), Yale's Larry Kelley (1936) and Clinton Frank (1937) and Ohio State's Archie Griffin (1974-75), the only individual two-time victor.
