Mattis and Pompeo 'misleading' in Khashoggi briefing, senator says

Mr Khashoggi was killed - and is believed to have been dismembered - after entering the Saudi consulate to obtain paperwork for his upcoming marriage.

A bipartisan group of senior senators on Tuesday said that a classified briefing by the Central Intelligence Agency director had only solidified their belief that Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, ordered the killing of Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi.

Turkey has been looking to extradite 18 suspects which include 15 of the alleged assassination group.

"The global community seems to doubt Saudi Arabia's commitment to prosecute this heinous crime", the official said, adding that by extraditing all suspects to Turkey, "Saudi authorities could address those concerns". Some 14 million people face starvation, and recent studies estimate 85,000 children under five have starved to death.

But two key US Republican senators said a Tuesday briefing by the CIA's director only strengthened their conviction that Prince Mohammed directed the murder. If it advances beyond that, senators have an opportunity to debate and add amendments to the resolution before a final vote.

Trump has equivocated over who is to blame for the killing, frustrating senators who are now looking for ways to punish the longtime Middle East ally.

The murder has damaged Riyadh's worldwide reputation and Western countries including the US, France and Canada have placed sanctions on almost 20 Saudi nationals.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from SC who has often been a Trump ally, said the only conclusion was that Prince Mohammed, known as MBS, is responsible for the killing.

"Better answers" are needed from Saudi Arabia on the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The Washington Post previously reported that Khalid called Khashoggi and told the journalist that he could go to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul where he was killed.

"There are lots of Republicans who are going to try to water this down, but they'll have to find 50 votes, and I'm not sure that they have 50 votes for a substitute".

"Maybe he did and maybe he didn't", Trump said last month about whether the crown prince had known about the murder.

"What I've been asked is - if I say something, I need the evidence", he continued. Both officials took the position that there was not enough evidence to tie the killing to the crown prince. That afternoon, senators frustrated with the briefing and the lack of response to Khashoggi's killing overwhelmingly voted to move forward with consideration of the Yemen resolution, 63-37. "It's not based on friendship as much as it's based on common interests, combating extremism in the Middle East and countering the Iranian threat", said Senator John Cornyn, the chamber's No. 2 Republican.

The Senate is planning to vote on a proposal to end USA military support to the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen, after members of both parties advanced the resolution last week.
