Ballon d'Or 2018 award ceremony

This means that the 33-year-old playmaker will break the dominance of Lionel Messi and Ronaldo in the last decade.

Croatia's Luka Modric and a few French World Cup winners will be hoping to finally end the 10-year duopoly of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The 2018 Ballon d'Or victor will be announced by France Football on Monday 3rd December.

It will be the first time since since the 2007 Ballon d'Or, which was won by Kaka, will go to a new recipient.

The team's most recent win was a 1-0 triumph over Valencia, a match which snapped Ronaldo's three-match goalscoring streak following finishes against SPAL, AC Milan and Manchester United.

But why are football's two most famous names not in the running to win the top prize?

"The award loses value if Messi isn't there", said Vicente del Bosque.

"There is only one player that has won the Champions League and the World Cup and he is called Varane", three-time Ballon d'Or victor Michel Platini said last month.

A World Cup year, though, resets the generally understood criteria to judge what it takes for a player to rise above his peers.

When does the Ballon d'Or ceremony start?

The Barcelona star will not be on the podium and, it seems, is viewed as the fifth-best player in world football. Modric, meanwhile, received the World Cup Golden Ball as the tournament's best player and won the Champions League with Real Madrid.

The Ballon d'Or ceremony will be held in the Grand Palais in Paris, France.
