But all of them invariably end up limping to Google graveyard, that virtual place which has become crowded in the last few years as the tech company has culled products and services again and again.

9to5Google has reported that, according to an unnamed source familiar with the product's internal roadmap, next year will be the last year Google Hangouts will be available to consumers. Since 2012, when it killed the Google Talk, the company has tried a number of messaging apps. Better, a lineage for the preservation of your existing Hangouts chat history/data would be implied by this reveal. The chat app was launched back in 2013, itself a replacement to three different messaging products which Google had been operating.

The news doesn't come as a surprise as Google had long ago stopped updating Google Hangouts.

Google is now working on a new messaging app that will support Rich Communications Services (RCS), making SMS nearly WhatsApp like.

Although the current focus for Hangouts Chat and Meet is undoubtedly business-focused, Johnston spoke vaguely of plans to make these more consumer-facing in future. In the process, Google also confirmed that development for Allo (the messaging app that had just been released less than two years prior) was being put on hold.

However, Hangouts as part of me Google will continue in the form Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet as both platforms are not going anywhere.
