Six US service members killed, wounded in Ghazni IED attack

American-led combat operations against the Taliban officially ended in 2014, but some U.S. troops remain in the country to provide training and assistance to Afghan forces, which do most of the fighting.

Three American service members were killed and three others were wounded in a roadside bomb blast in Afghanistan on Tuesday, officials said, marking what is likely the deadliest incident this year for USA forces in the country.

Lt. Ubon Mendie, a spokesman for the USA forces, said in a statement that three other service members and one American civilian contractor were injured in the blast.

Three US soldiers were killed and three wounded by a bomb in Afghanistan on Tuesday, Nato said, with the attack claimed by the Taliban as the US tries to ratchet up efforts to engage the militants in peace talks. Three other service members and one American contractor were wounded in the blast.

This is the second attack in a month targeting USA forces in the region.

During the same period, almost 29,000 Afghan police and soldiers had been killed, Ghani said. The top US officer in the country, Army Gen. Austin "Scott" Miller, took the unusual step of carrying a rifle in the city last week.

It also brings the total of US troops killed in combat in the Afghanistan War up to ten this year. "All of us, and throughout our coalition of 41 nations, recognize the threats posed by groups such as al-Qaida and ISIS and are determined to fight them here".

On 3 November, Utah mayor Bret Taylor was killed in an apparent insider attack while serving with the US Army National Guard to train Afghan security forces.

An American civilian contractor also was wounded and was being treated along with the other military personnel, according to the NATO-led Resolute Support mission.

The total number of US military casualties during the 17-year Afghan war has been more than 2,400.

The U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formally concluded their combat mission in 2014, but still provide vital support to Afghan security forces, who have been struggling in recent years to combat a resurgent Taliban and ISIS affiliate.

"U.S. troops are fighting terrorism side-by-side with us".
