Powerful winter storm slams Midwest, impacts millions of travelers

As of Monday morning, several schools in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and IL have been forced to close as a result of the snow.

Air travelers should call their airlines before heading to the airport on Sunday for information about flight cancellations.

"That's when the winds will be pretty strong as well, so even though you don't have falling snow, you might have some blowing snow", Dergan said.

The village of Huntley warned residents Sunday morning to limit travel; give snowplows and salt trucks room to work before, during and after the storm; and obey the village parking ordinance. The forecast for central IL is for up to six inches of snow, with the heaviest snow north of Springfield.

The weather service cautioned that snow, sleet and strong winds will create slick roads, poor visibility and unsafe travel leading into the morning.

And an approximately 60-mile stretch of Interstate 70 in Kansas has been closed, according to a tweet from the state's Department of Transportation, from WaKeeney to Russell.

The storm was bringing winds from 30 to 35 miles per hour (48-56 kph), with gusts of up to 45 to 50 miles mph (72-80 kph).

Snow Storm Underway in Southern Iowa

On Monday, Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer issued a state of emergency declaration for the state, according to multiple reports.

The winter storm is expected to continue east on Tuesday.

A system arriving in the region Sunday night could dump 5 to 8 inches of heavy, wet snow through Monday afternoon. As of Monday morning, almost 700 flights were canceled at O'Hare International Airport, while Midway International Airport reported about 70 flights had been canceled, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation. "It's pretty treacherous travel conditions", she said. Visibility will be severely restricted and travel extremely unsafe - trees and power lines may be downed with subsequent power outages likely.

Roads in much of Nebraska and the southern half of Iowa remained covered in snow and ice early Monday after the storm had passed those states.

The bulk of the snow is expected to fall Sunday evening, which could also potentially affect the Monday morning commute.

By Monday morning, many areas from the Plains to the Midwest will have seen 6 to 10 inches of snow, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.

At least 1,265 USA flights were canceled and another 5,000 or so were delayed on the final day of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, considered the busiest travel day of the year, according to the flight-tracking firm FlightAware.
