Hundreds in Portland show their support for Mueller investigation

The bulk of Whitaker's relevant experience came when he served as US attorney for the Southern District of Iowa from 2004 until 2009, a position for which he was recommended by Iowa Republican Sen. He's set to become the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee that would conduct any impeachment proceedings, if it comes to that.

On August 6, 2017, Whitaker also tweeted an op-ed newspaper piece from a former Philadelphia prosecutor carrying the headline: "Note to Trump's Lawyer: Do not cooperate with Mueller lynch mob".

The president has regularly attacked the Justice Department and Sessions, blaming the attorney-general for the spectre of the special counsel investigation into ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

He said that other former Trump associates Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen and Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg are all cooperating with the government, and that the "public needs to see the results" of the probe.

Whitaker had previously criticized Mueller's probe.

U.S. media sources have claimed special counsel Mueller is on the verge of claiming his biggest scalp yet as he readies an indictment against Donald Trump Junior.

Even after he arrived at the Justice Department, Whitaker expressed frustration about the length of Mueller's probe and doubts about the scope of his authority. She compared the current situation to the so-called Saturday Night Massacre in 1973, when President Nixon fired a special prosecutor and accepted the resignations of the attorney general and deputy attorney general. Oh, and he also has seven years of experience as an attorney, too. "Graham, I do believe we have the right to get a solid answer from him", she said. Whitaker hasn't done anything to impede the investigation since his appointment was announced. "We are a democracy, we are all equal under the law".

"There's a disrespect for norms, a disrespect for the rule of law, and a disrespect for the conventions of society and politics", he said, adding that politicians needed to "rise above party" to confront Trump. He has twice failed in bids for statewide elected office, most recently losing the 2014 GOP primary for the U.S. Senate to now-Sen.

Many in the crowd wore shirts supporting Democrat gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum, who trailed Republican Ron DeSantis in the vote totals but closed the gap enough to trigger an automatic recount.

Christie is reportedly a personal friend of Trump's and endorsed him after dropping out of the 2016 presidential campaign himself.

Follayattar said the Portland protest exceeded her expectations. He earned $402,000 in 2016, the group's tax filing shows.

These comments have led Democrats - who this week took a majority in he House of Representatives following the midterm elections - to call on Whitaker to recuse himself from overseeing the investigation.

Whitaker grew up in the Des Moines suburb of Ankeny.

"If Mueller wants to do any more subpoenas, if he wants to bring in Don Jr.to talk about the meeting at Trump Tower, he has to go through Whitaker to make that happen", said Scot Northern, who attended the protest in Iowa City.
