Saudis sent 'clean-up' team to Turkey after Khashoggi killing, official says

Khashoggi's sons on Monday demanded the return of the body of the Washington Post columnist and critic of the Saudi government, who disappeared at the consulate on Oct 2.

Saudi King Salman embarked on an unprecedented domestic tour on Tuesday, an official said, as the country grapples with an global crisis over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

A Turkish official said investigators believe Saudi Arabia sent a two-person "cleanup" team to Turkey nine days after Khashoggi's death to remove any evidence of his killing from the consulate as well as the nearby residence of the Saudi consul general.

Speaking during a trip to Japan, Cavusoglu told reporters that Turkey said Saudi Arabia and other countries interested in the information have been given the opportunity to see it.

The senior Turkish official confirmed the main details of the report and said the Saudi team was sent with the knowledge of top Saudi officials.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, also known as MBS, launched seven strategic projects in renewable energy, atomic energy, water desalination, genetic medicine and the aircraft industry during his visit to King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology on Monday.

They described their father as "courageous, generous, and very fearless", and they said they still had faith in the Saudi king to bring their father's killers to justice.

After first insisting Khashoggi left the consulate unharmed, Saudi authorities said he was killed in an argument that degenerated into a brawl before finally accepting what Turkey had said virtually from the start - that he was killed in a premeditated hit.

Lockheed Martin has found itself near the center of the worldwide furor over the alleged murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Saudi authorities denied ordering his death, but admitted that the journalist, who fled the country a year ago, died in an altercation with several men inside the consulate building, in what Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir described as a "rogue operation".

Salah and Abdullah Khashoggi said the past weeks had been very hard and full of uncertainty for the entire family, adding that without their father's body, they would be unable to grieve.

They were part of the team that arrived on Oct. 11, and they were at the consulate daily from Oct. 12 to Oct. 17.

"I really hope that whatever happened wasn't painful for him, or it was quick", he added.

Although Al-Aiban said reforms were proceeding, United Nations committees have said no law exists in Saudi Arabia to protect a right to free assembly, that there is little female involvement in government and that the number of executions rose sharply between 2013 and 2015.

Following reports, Vice President Fuat Oktay said: "The question now is who gave the orders".
