All the Ways Democrats Made History on Tuesday

(5) Cindy Hyde-Smith won a plurality in MS and is heavily favored to win her runoff election to become the first woman ever elected to the US Senate from her state.

Women won more seats than ever before in the US House after a record number of female candidates were on ballots across the country, fueled by Democratic opposition to President Donald Trump.

More than 237 women House candidates - 185 of the Democrats - were on the ballot, including 71 incumbents, 46 seeking open seats and 120 challengers, according to CAWP.

A record number of women were elected to the House on Tuesday, almost two years after women spilled out into the streets of Washington and in cities across the country in defiance of the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Ilhan Omar, a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, is one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress and will serve Minnesota's 5th District in the House.

Native American and Muslim women will join Congress for the first time alongside the youngest elected woman. With the win, Rojas said, the progressive movement challenging the establishment of the Democratic Party has shown it "can unseat Democrats who are ideologically and demographically out-of-touch with their voters and forced Democratic elected across the country to stiffen their spines". Davids also became the second-ever lesbian woman elected to Congress.

The impact of Tuesday's election will be a topic of much debate, but one thing's clear: Women made big strides. In 1982, 58 per cent of women voted for Democrats and 41 per cent voted for Republicans.

The 29-year-old comfortably beat her Republican opponent, Anthony Pappas, to win in New York's 14th District.

"When it comes to women of color candidates, folks don't just talk about a glass ceiling - what they describe is a concrete one". They come from a wide variety of backgrounds - from military veterans to teachers - and many had never run for office before.

In split-gender races, women have won 65 races and lost 101, but this is not necessarily a strong indication of gender bias.

Candidates like Sherrill, McGrath and Katie Hill, who was running for a House seat in California, raised staggering amounts of money, though women still raised less, on average, than men.

"This is the year of the woman, and the fact that women were willing to put themselves on the line is important, whether they've been Republicans or Democrats", said former Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala, a first-time candidate who defeated Republican Maria Elvira Salazar in south Florida.

Some of Tuesday's black female pioneers, like IL nurse and Democrat Lauren Underwood and CT teacher and Democrat Jahana Hayes, were first-time candidates. The US has also voted in its first openly gay governor as minorities and marginalised groups increase their voices on Capitol Hill after the midterms.
