Girl Scout, mom killed in crash loved crafts

New information Monday morning, we now know the names of the Girl Scout troop members and a mother killed in a hit-and-run crash in Lake Hallie, Wis., on Saturday.

- Authorities say the driver accused in a deadly hit-and-run crash with a Girl Scout troop that was picking up trash on the side of the road near Eau Claire, Wisconsin Saturday was allegedly "huffing" chemicals prior to the crash.

According to police, the driver was huffing when the crash happened; it's when someone intentionally inhales chemical vapors. One of the girls attended Southview. One additional 10-year-old is still in the hospital, but they say she is reported to be in stable condition.

Pastor Jim Woldhuis says the mother and daughter who died attended Chippewa Valley Bible Church, where he presides.

The 21-year-old driver, Colten Treu of Chippewa Falls, later surrendered.

Sherri Jasper, a Girl Scout board member and counselor at Halmstad Elementary School, leads the program for a candlelight vigil at the school in Chippewa Falls, Wis., on Sunday evening. A fourth girl survived but was in critical condition Saturday night at a Minnesota hospital. But to his credit, the 21-year-old came back later and turned himself in to the police.

Authorities are recommending 13 charges against Colten Treu, including four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.

Acevedo says Girl Scouts everywhere stand with "our sister Girl Scouts in Wisconsin to grieve and comfort one another in the wake of this awful tragedy".

The victims were struck Saturday morning while picking up trash in Lake Hallie, which is 90 miles (145 kilometers) east of Minneapolis and just south of Chippewa Falls. He has been identified as Colton Treu, 21, of Chippewa Falls.

"Our hearts are broken for the girls and families of the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes", CEO Sylvia Acevedo of Girl Scouts of the U.S. said in a statement Sunday.

Lake Hallie police said Monday that the deceased were: 9-year-old Jayna Kelley and 10-year-old Autum Helgeson, both of Lake Hallie, and 10-year-old Haylee Hickle and her 32-year-old mother, Sara Jo Schneider, from the Town of Lafayette. "We will be providing ongoing support for both students (and) families and staff for as long as needed".

The four were killed while cleaning garbage out of a ditch in Lake Hallie.

The Chippewa Falls Police Department in a statement posted to Facebook Saturday evening called it a "truly horrific incident" and extended its condolences to the victims and their families. Two other scouts were injured.

Officials say two area Girl Scouts and one adult are dead. Sokup says he will be charged with four homicide counts.
