State Dept. calls for journalist safety as Trump lashes out

"As responsible members of the worldwide community, we must reveal the identities of the puppetmasters behind Khashoggi's killing and discover those in whom Saudi officials - still trying to cover up the murder - have placed their trust".

The Saudi government initially insisted Khashoggi had left the consulate and later that he had died in an unplanned "rogue operation".

"I do not believe for a second that King Salman, the custodian of the holy mosques, ordered the hit on Khashoggi", Erdogan wrote.

He also denied hearing alleged audio evidence of Khashoggi's murder at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

Turkish investigators believe the journalist, who was living in exile, was strangled when he visited to collect documents for his forthcoming marriage to a Turkish citizen.

Earlier on Friday, Yasin Aktay, an adviser to Erdogan, said that his body was "dissolved" after he was murdered and dismembered.

"The killing of a journalist naturally should be met with outrage, but numerous kingdom's critics seem bent on dragging Saudi Arabia through the mud", a Saudi political analyst told AFP.

"I would like to send this message to Mr Trump: I would like him to support Turkey's legal efforts in trying to bring light to the situation and to discover the whereabouts of his body", Cengiz said in a recorded message broadcast at a memorial for Khashoggi in Washington. As if a devastating war in Yemen and the unsafe persecution of dissidents within the country aren't concerning enough to the president, Saudi Arabia's 007 spy mission inside Turkey demonstrates that they're willing to break worldwide norms and laws to get what they want.

Nauert noted in a statement the State Department's revocation of visas for some of the Saudi officials implicated in the October 2 killing of the writer, who was living in self-imposed exile in the USA while writing columns critical of his government for The Washington Post.

"There's now an added cost to. cooperating or partnering with Saudi Arabia in general, the government in particular and, especially, the crown prince".

'15 members arrived in Turkey for killing Khashoggi, ' Erdogan told lawmakers in his rather blunt speech.

Erdogan added that there could be "severe consequences" if anyone commits such an act in a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation country again, saying failure to punish the perpetrators could set a very unsafe precedent. "If anyone chooses to ignore that warning, they will face severe consequences", Erdogan wrote in his Post column. "Unfortunately, the Saudi authorities have refused to answer those questions", he said.

What do we know about the murder?

Where is Khashoggi's body?

Istanbul chief prosecutor Irfan Fidan said this week that Khashoggi was suffocated as soon as he entered the consulate, and his body was then cut up and disposed of.

Once an adviser to the Saudi royal family, Khashoggi fell out of favour with the government previous year and went into self-imposed exile.

The kingdom has faced a torrent of worldwide condemnation over the murder of Khashoggi, upending the young Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's image as a reformer on the global stage.

The journalist's death and Saudi Arabia's inconsistent public statements regarding its responsibility have shocked the world. "Well we've noticed and we're outraged and we will not forget".
