Koreas to seek talks with International Olympic Committee on joint 2032 Olympics bid - Seoul

"I realized things that happened (in North Korea) might have constituted sexual violence and harassment, or rape after I left North Korea", said Lee So-yeon, head of the New Korea Women's Union, at a press conference Thursday in central Seoul.

"Now the South, the North, and the United States will achieve the complete denuclearisation and lasting peace on the Korean peninsula", he said.

"The sexual violence in North Korea is an open secret, widely-tolerated and non-treaty", said Kenneth Roth, executive director of HRW.

In September, Kim Jong Un also pledged at a summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in to close Sohae and allow experts to observe the dismantling of the missile engine-testing site and a launch pad.

Roth told reporters Thursday the objective of the report is not to destabilize the North Korean regime but request its highest authorities to solve the issue of sexual violence.

The report comes as US-led global diplomacy focuses on North Korean nuclear disarmament.

Pyongyang maintains that it protects and promotes "genuine human rights".

The problem also arises from a lack of sex education and low awareness of sexual violence in North Korea.

For many South Koreans, it's mind-boggling that the Koreas are even talking about sharing the Olympics.

"Sometimes, out of nowhere, you cry at night and don't know why", Oh Jung-hee, a former trader in her 40s told Human Rights Watch (HRW). "Seizing the companies' assets in South Korea could also be a long and hard process if they continue to refuse paying the victims". It reveals an oppressive world where officials - from police officers and prison guards to market supervisors - faced virtually no consequences for their routine abuse of women.

"Every evening, women were forced to go with a goalkeeper and were raped", said one victim, thirty-year-old, who was imprisoned in a detention centre at the border. "I stood still quietly, acting like I didn't notice, hoping it wouldn't be me", she said.

"As long as the USA denies even the basic decorum for its dialogue partner and clings to the outdated acting script which the previous administrations have all tried and failed, one can not expect any progress in the implementation", a North Korean foreign ministry spokesperson said in a statement at the time. They also spoke of deeply embedded patterns of discrimination against women, corruption and a lack of support mechanisms.

She said that the climate of sexual abuse was so pervasive that it had been normalized - both by the perpetrators and their victims.

Higher-level military officers "often patted female soldiers on their hips and breasts or put their hands underneath their uniforms around their necks when they passed by them". We don't even realise when we are upset.

She told The Washington Post she was "picked" as a rape target by a guard at a detention facility in North Hamgyong. A third woman said sexual abuse was considered shameful for women because people thought they must have brought it on themselves.

One of the ways South Korea copes with potential aggression from its neighbor and traditional enemy of North Korea is to force all able-bodied men to serve two years in the military.
