Indonesia says survivors unlikely from Lion Air plane crash

Indonesia's disaster agency spokesman posted video of some debris on Twitter.

Boats, a helicopter and 250 rescuers, including divers, were working at the crash site, some 34 nautical miles northeast of the coast near Jakarta in the Java Sea. Weather conditions were normal but the brand new aircraft had experienced a technical issue on its previous flight.

The jet, on a 1-hour flight, was carrying 181 passengers, including one child and two babies, and eight crew members.

Australia had not received signals from the plane's emergency locator either, it told Indonesia in a reply to a query, agency chief Syaugi said.

At Jakarta airport, tearful passengers waited for news: a mother urged her toddler son to "wait and be brave", another told her crying girl, "be patient, pray the best for Papa".

Feni, who uses a single name, said her soon to be married sister was on the flight, planning to meet relatives in Pangkal Pinang.

"We don't have any information", she said, as her father wiped tears from reddened eyes.

The plane that crashed into the waters off Indonesia's capital was the most recent model in Boeing Co.'s storied 737 family, the company's best-selling plane and a workhorse for the growing ranks of budget airlines. "I usually arrive in Jakarta at 3 a.m., but this morning I arrived at the airport at 6:20 a.m. and I missed the flight". Photos circulating online showed the distraught minister trying to comfort stunned colleagues.

"You could feel the explosion from the shockwave in the water", said Mr Gauk, who goes by only one name, telling the pair's story from the beach in Karawang regency.

Members of a rescue team prepare to search for survivors from the Lion Air flight JT 610, which crashed into the sea, at Jakarta seaport on October 29, 2018. It said that winds were weak and clouds normally connected with air turbulence were not present.

According to CNN, 13 minutes into Lion Air flight, the aircraft, a brand-new Boeing 737 MAX 8 that had been operating for less than three months, disappeared from radar.

Earlier this year, Lion Air announced it was buying 50 Boeing 737 MAX 10 jets for $6.24 billion. The Max 8 replaced the similar 800 in the Chicago-based plane maker's product line.

Lion Air's plane was nearly brand new though it crashed shortly after take-off from the airport in Jakarta, after the pilot reported he needed to return the aircraft to the ground. He didn't know specifics of the problem when asked in a TV interview.

"Indeed there were reports about a technical problem, and the technical problem has been resolved in accordance with the procedures released by the plane manufacturer", he said. "I did not know exactly but let it be investigated by the authorities".

Lion Air flight JT610 crashed into the sea Monday shortly after taking off from Jakarta, Indonesia, likely leaving no survivors, according to Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee.

Preliminary flight tracking data from Flightradar24 shows the aircraft climbed to around 5,000 feet (1,524 m) before losing, and then regaining, height, before finally falling toward the sea.

The crash is the worst airline accident in Indonesia since an AirAsia flight crashed in December 2014.

Indonesian airlines were barred in 2007 from flying to Europe because of safety concerns, though several were allowed to resume services in the following decade. The Federal Aviation Administration lifted that ban in August 2016.

Indonesia's air travel industry is booming, with the number of domestic passengers growing significantly over the past decade, but it has acquired a reputation for poor regulation and its airlines had once been banned from United States and European airspace.

Lion Air, a low-priced airline that dominates the domestic air travel market, has had more than a dozen accidents in its almost 20-year history, but none with fatalities since 2004.

The 737 Max 8 was leased from China Minsheng Investment Group Leasing Holdings Ltd., according to the official China News Service.
