Abe and Modi build ties after Japan PM’s China visit

Japan's formulation of a "free and open Indo-Pacific" received a central place in the vision statement issued at the end of the talks, with both sides stressing their "unwavering commitment to it".

The 2+2 Dialogue will be an addition to the existing mechanisms like the Annual Defence Ministerial Dialogue, Defence Policy Dialogue, the National Security Advisers' Dialogue, and Staff-level Dialogue.

Their statement is expected to include improved cooperation between the two countries and the United States amid efforts to counter China's expansion in the South China Sea. Mr Abe's visit - the first by any Japanese prime minister since 2011 - was aimed at repairing ties that have been riven by disputes over territory, military expansion in the Pacific and World War II history.

"The two leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to the total elimination of nuclear weapons and remained resolute in the task of strengthening global cooperation to address the challenges of nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism", the vision statement read.

Abe and Modi are also likely to agree to expand the two countries' cooperation in the medical field and boost exchanges in various areas.

In September previous year, Abe paid a visit to Ahmedabad in Modi's home state of Gujarat in western India and attended a ceremony to mark the beginning of construction of a new high-speed railway employing Japanese bullet train technology to link the city and Mumbai. "The policies being made in India, the work being done towards public welfare, for these the nation is being felicitated today", he said. China has resorted to aggressive patrols in the last few years.

The prime minister leaves for India later today.

Abe and Modi then visited a factory of industrial robot manufacturer Fanuc in Yamanashi before moving on to the prime minister's holiday home in the nearby village of Narusawa.

China is a strategic and economic rival of India.

At the lunch session, Abe and Modi affirmed Japan-India cooperation for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, according to sources with access to the meeting.

He also met Heita Kawakatsu, the Governor of Shizuoka province, and Yuji Kuroiwa, the Governor of Kanagawa Prefecture, and discussed ways to strengthen cultural and people-to-people ties between India and Japan. "It's not only big companies but micro, small and medium enterprises that are welcome to India", he said.

Modi said that the inputs offered at the Business Leaders Forum will propel India to achieve global benchmarking. "There are no negatives but only opportunities in this relationship which are waiting to be seized".
