Halloween scores second-best October opening ever with $77.5 million

Meanwhile, other Halloween movies have her institutionalized, or shot dead by the police.

Heading into the weekend, Halloween had been projected to earn $70 million or more - a strong start for a film that cost about $10 million to make. Halloween smashed the franchise's previous record holder, Rob Zombie's 2007 remake of the '78 original, which took in $26 million Dollars. Globally the film has brought in $461.2 million, and could become Sony's highest grossing 2018 release (currently it sits behind Hotel Transylvania 3).

Halloween, created by legendary writer and director, John Carpenter, is still a smashing success in theaters, even after a whopping four decades. It's also the second-best R-rated horror movie opening of all time (IT, released a year ago, holds that title) and the best opening for any movie in the Halloween franchise, of which there have been 11 (!) entries, all of which the latest movie acts like never happened, at least until the next reboot. Plus, the critics have liked it, the film now at 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. That easily beat the old record for a slasher movie, set in 2009 by a reboot of the "Friday the 13th" series, and keeps the industry on a record path for October.

Directed by David Gordon Green from a script co-written by himself, Jeff Fradley and Danny McBride, the film stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, Virginia Gardner, Miles Robbins, Dylan Arnold, Drew Scheid, and Nick Castle.

An eagerly awaited new "Halloween" movie killed it at the box office, setting weekend records for the popular slasher genre of horror films.

Venom which fell two spots landed below A Star is Born which held onto second place for the third week in a row.

Damien Chazelle's Neil Armstrong biopic "First Man" tumbled to fifth place in its second weekend earning $8.6 million, down 46 percent from its launch. There's also the option of removing this film from the continuity, just as it removed the existing Halloween sequels from the timeline, Blumhouse and Green could be so bold as to say this film stands on its own, outside any other sequels that came before or after. The film has now brought in $10.6 million at the domestic box office.
