More cases of polio-like illness among children reported

The New Jersey Department of Health reported one case in February and two in August but said they are not linked to the multi-state investigation.

The CDC says AFM is diagnosed by examining a patient's nervous system in combination with reviewing pictures of the spinal cord, and the muscles and reflexes in the body become weak.

In the US, "the increase in AFM cases in 2014 coincided with a national outbreak of severe respiratory illness among people caused by enterovirus D68 (EV-D68)".

The children live in King, Pierce, Lewis, Snohomish and Skagit counties.

The Illinois cases are preliminary diagnoses and only the U.S. Centers for Disease Control can confirm the diagnosis, according to Arnold.

The cause of AFM, and the reason for the rise in cases starting in 2014, is not known.

UH said both patients have been discharged, but the Ohio Department of Health and the CC are continuing to monitor the illness.

Health officials will never have a firm count of cases of AFM because not all states require doctors to report them. The CDC reported 120 cases of AFM in 2014, 22 cases in 2015, 149 cases in 2016 and 33 cases in 2017. Were working closely with medical providers and public health agencies.

There are a variety of possible causes of AFM, such as viruses, environmental toxins, and genetic disorders. Well continue to investigate and share information when we have it. Children with asthma may have a higher risk for severe respiratory illness caused by EV-D68 infection.

The New York State Department of Health is advising parents/guardians, other caregivers and health care providers to be aware of the signs and symptoms of enterovirus EV-D68, which has now been confirmed in39 children in New York State. "All but one of the Texas cases are children".

AFM has been reported in 26 states in the USA, with a total of 85 cases and climbing.

The virus that causes polio has been eradicated in most of the world by vaccination, but regular epidemics once swept through, paralyzing thousands of children.
