PS4 Users Are Claiming That Malicious Messages Are Breaking Their Consoles

Some PS4 owners are experiencing a frightening glitch that's forcing them to factory reset their consoles. Exactly the same thing - got a message, controller stopped working and audio cut out. The bug, in some instances, has been used during matches to cause the opposing team to crash and be unable to complete a match.

You can view the exploit message in the app too and it won't break your phone, but deleting it there still won't protect your console.

And you don't even have to open the message for it to happen like your conventional email-spread malware. Some users went through the hassle of factory resetting their consoles to fix the problem, but Sony does have another method in place before a proper fix rolls out. You can opt to receive messages only from your friends, or you can turn off messaging altogether. Or, if you're a grumpy bastard like I am, just disable messaging completely.

KitGuru Says: Given that this messaging bug harms the integrity of competitive multiplayer on the PS4, Sony will need to fix this as soon as possible.

Reddit user u/Huntstark explains that the only way to prevent the malicious messages is to set you privacy settings to "Friends Only" or "No One", preventing random accounts sending messages. You can do this on your console, web browser, or smartphone app.

While it doesn't outright reference the PS5, the job listing isn't exactly subtle about what the job will entail: "You will own the roadmap for [the] next generation PlayStation campaign", it claims.

If you have been affected, your only recourse is to rebuild your console's database in safe mode.
