Thousands rally in Chicago against Trumps anti-woman agenda

Kavanaugh is the second justice Trump has successfully nominated to the Supreme Court, following the confirmation past year of Neil Gorsuch to the seat left by the late Antonin Scalia.

He will take his seat on Tuesday - on the far right of the bench, next to Justice Elena Kagan - hearing immigration and other cases. Kavanaugh was a judge on the D.C. Circuit for 12 years.

With police standing by, a small group of protesters demonstrated outside the courthouse, holding signs saying "Shame" and "He sits on a throne of lies", while chanting, "This isn't over, we're still here".

On a positive note for his party, he said he expects the Kavanaugh confirmation fight and approval to provide an "adrenaline shot" of GOP enthusiasm at the polls.

Chief Justice John Roberts formally welcomed Kavanaugh, 53, to a court that now has five conservative members and four liberals. Like it or not, we're nearly certainly stuck with Kavanaugh.

University of Virginia analyst Kyle Kondik told VOA the furor over Kavanaugh and allegations of sexual misconduct when he was a teenager, which he denied, could be "weaponized" by Republican Senate candidates looking to defeat Democratic incumbents in Republican-leaning states. Or in 2010, when Republicans picked up 63 House seats and six Senate seats in Barack Obama's first midterm election. By 51 percent to 41 percent, more adults disapprove than approve of Kavanaugh's Senate confirmation.

At one point, Kavanaugh could be seen having a lighthearted exchange with liberal Justice Elena Kagan, seated next to him. Gorsuch responded with a faux grimace of pain.

Joe Manchin (W.Va.) and almost all Senate Republicans forced through Kavanaugh's confirmation on Saturday with the narrowest vote on a Supreme Court nominee in more than a century, and Kavanaugh joined his eight Supreme Court colleagues on the bench Tuesday morning. And when Roberts provided the deciding vote to uphold most of the Affordable Care Act, conservatives led by Trump were apoplectic. Kavanaugh appeared less sympathetic to the defendants than Gorsuch.

Although the complaints were originally lodged with the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, Kavanaugh's former court, the circuit executive of that court asked Roberts to transfer the matters to another circuit out of a "concern that local disposition may weaken public confidence in the process". The conservative justices were all appointed by Republican presidents, the liberals by Democrats.

With his attack on Democratic Senators and "left-wing opposition groups", Judge Kavanaugh left no doubt about his political allegiances. In the end, neither high-profile accusations of past sexual misconduct nor the daily demonstrations against him "made a difference".

Kavanaugh gave a forceful, emotional denial of those allegations during testimony before lawmakers that some Democrats said showed a lack of judicial temperament.

He later expressed regret over some of his comments.

The court, a 68-year-old institution that has been responsible for a lot of modernisation of Indian society, is occasionally accused of corruption, but rarely accused of partisanship.

It is, according to the Women's March in Chicago, protesting against "the anti-women of the White House and the republican Party".

At Monday's East Room ceremony, Trump again invoked the rhetoric Republicans are using to frame the whole episode: Kavanaugh, Trump said, had been "proven innocent", even though critics say the investigation was not thorough enough to merit that conclusion.
