Facebook October 2018 security breach: Everything you need to know

The company said the breach is under investigation by the FBI, which asked Facebook "not to discuss who may be behind this attack".

The social media giant, which has more than two billion users worldwide, announced last month that engineers had discovered a "security issue" which affected 50 million accounts.

The hackers accessed names, email addresses or phone numbers from the 29 million accounts, according to Facebook.

Mr Rosen said of the 29 million users hit, 15 million had their names and contact details gathered. And for 14 million more people, the hackers were able to get a lot more information, like username, gender, relationship status, religious, birthday, and a ton of other information including things you've searched for.

On Friday, the company revealed 14 million users had highly personal information stolen by hackers. Facebook will also send messages directly to those people affected by the hack. "They used an automated technique to move from account to account so they could steal the access tokens of those friends, and for friends of those friends, and so on, totaling about 400,000 people", Facebook wrote. For those who don't know, Security Tokens or access tokens are digital encryption keys that are unique to an account and are stored to keep the user logged in so they don't have to enter passwords all the time. On the Facebook Help Center users can check if they have been affected and what information may have been accessed.

Could hackers have been able to see the last person you cyberstalked, or that party photo you were tagged in? The Mark Zuckerberg-led company also said it was taking the precautionary measure of resetting access tokens for another 40 million accounts that were "subject to a "View As" look-up in the past year", bringing the total to 90 million accounts who will now have to log back into the service.

Last month, Facebook reset the tokens of almost 50 million accounts that it believed were affected and, as a precaution, also reset the tokens for another 40 million accounts that had used "View As" in the past year.

It will also provide guidance on how to spot and deal with suspicious emails or texts. Software bugs impacted the "View As" feature in Facebook, which allowed for hackers to access the secure tokens for Facebook accounts, which allows those individuals to take over Facebook accounts as they see fit and access the data therein. There had been concerns about whether hackers could access outside apps that use Facebook login credentials, but that turns out not to have been the case.

You can check the complete details of data stolen during this massive security breach by heading over to this link. The more data a hacker has about someone, the more believable they can make the email lure. The Register asked Facebook whether it intends to pay for identity theft monitoring for the 30 million people affected, a common act of contrition following data thefts.

"Once you've become a target, it never ends", he said.
