After Michael's rampage on Florida Panhandle: 'Nothing Left'

Mexico Beach, where the hurricane came ashore, suffered massive destruction from the 155 mile per hour (250 kph) winds and several feet of storm surge.

Teresa Sheffield walks out of the remains of her second floor apartment in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael October 11 in Panama City, Florida.

Hurricane Michael is now a tropical storm, more than 24 hours after making landfall on the Florida panhandle Wednesday.

By early Friday morning the remnants of Michael had moved into the Atlantic Ocean northeast of Norfolk, Virginia, the National Hurricane Centre said.

"All of my furniture was floating", said Ms Marquardt, 67.

With many roads impassable, Scott says food and water "are being airdropped into the hardest-hit communities, and law enforcement are escorting resources on the road". "It was bad, and now there's just nothing left".

While forecasters said Michael was gradually losing its tropical traits, a new chapter would begin as an extra-tropical storm, predicted to intensify with gale force winds once it starts cross out into the Atlantic.

Another man was killed in Iredell County, North Carolina, north of Charlotte, when a tree fell on his vehicle, said Cooper, who blamed the incident on the storm.

The storm caused almost 500,000 power outages in North Carolina, the state's Emergency Management Agency said on Friday morning.

Under a clear blue sky, families living along the Florida Panhandle emerged from shelters and hotels to a perilous landscape of shattered homes and shopping centers, beeping security alarms, wailing sirens and hovering helicopters.

Numerous injured in Florida were taken to Panama City, 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Mexico Beach. Downed power lines and twisted street signs lay all around.

A man who died when a tree fell on a home near Greensboro, Florida, has been identified as Steven Sweet, according to Lt. Anglie Hightower, Gadsden County sheriff's public information officer.

The Coast Guard said shallow water response crews had rescued about 40 people, in addition to having helped evacuate 142 nursing home patients to a hospital in Pensacola.

"So many lives have been changed forever".

It is also the first Category 4 hurricane to ever make landfall on the Florida Panhandle, and "the worst storm" that area has ever seen, Florida Gov. Rick Scott said.

Michael severely damaged cotton, timber, pecan and peanut crops, causing estimated liabilities as high as $1.9 billion and affecting up to 3.7 million crop acres (1.5 million hectares), said Brad Rippey, a meteorologist for the U.S. Agriculture Department. It includes the privately insured wind and storm surge damage to residential, commercial and industrial properties and automobiles. It doesn't include losses covered by the National Flood Insurance Program.

Pecan, cotton, and peanut harvests were at risk as the risky storm plowed its way through Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolinas. Michael flooded homes, tore roofs off and sank boats. It killed at least 12 people in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia, officials said.

He warned that the death toll may go up, saying in an appearance on CNN that "those numbers could climb as search-and-rescue teams get out". There's no water, no power and emergency officials have no access to many towns from the Florida Panhandle to Virginia.

Governor scott says the us coast guard carried out 10 missions overnight, saving at least 27 people.

Now they have the grim task of accounting for all who stayed behind.

"Either the shear calculations are unrepresentative or Michael has become more inertially stable due to its large eye and large outer wind field, making it more shear resistant", the report said. The woman lived in a small cinderblock house about 150 yards (meters) from the Gulf and thought she would be OK. The home was found smashed, with no sign of the woman.

Col. Brian Laidlaw told the 3,600 airmen stationed at the base just east of Panama City that he won't ask them or their families to return until their safety is guaranteed. "Do you think it would have floated away?"
