For Kavanaugh, a collegial start to U.S. Supreme Court career

For Kavanaugh, a collegial start to U.S. Supreme Court career

Her opposition to Kavanaugh was the last straw for many, leading Trump to excoriate her, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and conservative commentator Laura Ingraham to hint that they may challenge her for the GOP nomination in 2022. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, voted against the Democratic proposal, saying people in her high-cost state could benefit from the low-priced option. Heading into the November midterms, the party is defending its House and Senate majorities.

Questioned if the Senate leader should play a bigger role pushing back against Trump's more combative rhetoric on minorities and other groups at a time of steep polarization, McConnell dismissed the need for such interventions.

A Democratic measure aimed at eliminating short-term health care plans that don't cover pre-existing conditions failed in the Senate on Wednesday in a tied vote of 50-50.

His remarks on Murkowski were part of a wide-ranging interview in which McConnell acknowledged that the extended fight over confirming Kavanaugh has widened an existing gender gap in which Republicans trail Democrats in support among women.

"It was a simple fix", McConnell said.

The 15 complaints deal with statements Kavanaugh made during his confirmation hearings. "For Kavanaugh to recuse would be for him to say, 'Yes, I understand you don't trust me. and I validate that concern.' He's not going to say that".

The Republicans, who control Congress but struggle to get much done, are famed for their promotion of "messaging" bills that don't change anything. Outrage over the way Democrats pursued the claims against Kavanaugh has been cited in several recent polls as boosting Republican enthusiasm to turn out in the election.

It was clear Democrats would lose, and a real victory was never feasible since the measure would have died anyway in the Republican-run House.

Kavanaugh's appointment roiled Washington for weeks, after university professor Christine Blasey Ford accused him of sexually assaulting him more than three decades ago when both were teenagers growing up in suburban Washington.

"When you're dealing with an ideological party that is driven by the lust for power, that is funded by corporate interests who want a government that does its bidding, you can be civil but you can't overcome what they intend to do unless you win elections", she told Amanpour. Feinstein has denied that she or her staff leaked the accusation.

She added: "Republicans are saying, 'We want to see results in Washington". She voted "present" in the actual confirmation vote.

Each federal court has a so-called "judicial council" to investigate conduct complaints and make disciplinary recommendations.

The left's use of uncorroborated sexual assault allegations to block Kavanaugh's path to the Supreme Court, Trump said, violated "every notion of fairness, decency and due process".
