Saudi Journalist, Critic of the Regime, Killed at Consulate in Turkey

Saudi Arabia's consul in Istanbul opened his mission to Reuters on Saturday in an effort to show that Khashoggi was not on the premises. That team was sent "specifically for the murder", a person with knowledge of the Turkish investigation tells the Post. Their ambassador to the U.S. insists that he personally had a friendly relationship with Khashoggi and remained in contact whenever both of them were in Washington.

Saudi Arabia has called the allegations that it killed 59-year-old Khashoggi "baseless" but has offered no evidence over the past seven days to show that he ever left the building.

Turkish officials told Reuters at the weekend they believed he had been killed inside the Saudi consulate.

"We have seen conflicting reports on the safety and whereabouts of prominent Saudi journalist and Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi", Pompeo said in a statement late Monday. "Jamal has many friends in the Kingdom, including myself, and despite our differences, and his choice to go into his so called 'self-exile, ' we still maintained regular contact when he was in Washington".

But even hard-nosed pragmatists, like Aaron David Miller, a former Middle East adviser to Republican and Democratic administrations, have urged the White House to denounce the prince should it be established that Khashoggi has, in fact, been murdered.

The US president told reporters on Monday: "Hopefully that will sort itself out".

It is, perhaps, possible that MBS is labouring under a sense of extreme superiority thanks to his connections with the US.

"If Mr Khashoggi was murdered inside the consulate, it will cast the Saudi regime and its de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in a new and disturbing light and require a thorough reevaluation of US-Saudi relations", the newspaper said in an op-ed.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has been documenting the increasingly harsh treatment of journalists in Saudi Arabia.

The mainstream - so far - is not reporting sufficiently on the huge, well-funded Saudi lobbying and Congressional bribing apparatus in the US; you have to turn to this excellent exposé in The Nation, which reported that "More than a third of the members of Congress contacted by such a [public relations] firm [registered to promote Saudi interests] also received a campaign contribution from a foreign agent at that firm". He added that Saudi Arabia's agreeing to Turkey's request to search the consulate would "at best reduce tensions between the two countries".

Saudi Arabia is a longtime ally of the United States, but on Monday senior USA officials expressed alarm over Khashoggi's disappearance.

Erdogan, whose AK Party is rooted in political Islam, also supported a government in Egypt led by the Muslim Brotherhood, which Saudi Arabia has designated a terrorist movement. Relations were already strained after Turkey sent troops to the Gulf state of Qatar past year in a show of support after its Gulf neighbours, including Saudi Arabia, imposed an embargo on Doha.

The United States is seeking information, a State Department official said.

The case would not go unsolved, Aktay said.

Trump, who has long criticized the USA media, on Monday said he was concerned about reports regarding the journalist and did not "like hearing about it", but that he hoped the situation "will sort itself out".

The Washington Post chose to leave a blank space where Khashoggi's column would have been in its Friday edition in support of the missing writer.

What have both countries said?

. "Don't you have cameras and other things?" "I said nothing. I didn't want to lose my job or my freedom".
