China rebukes USA during tense Pompeo visit

Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, made the announcement after a Sunday meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Pompeo is on a whistle-stop tour around Asia mainly focused on North Korea's nuclear program, but upon arrival in Beijing, the agenda swiftly pivoted to the burgeoning acrimony between the world's two biggest economies, sparked by PresidentDonald Trump's trade war and fueled by his allegations that the Chinese government is "meddling" in next month's midterm elections.

Commenting on Pompeo's meeting with Kim, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Monday that Kim is expected to visit Russian Federation soon, and Chinese leader Xi Jinping is also expected to travel to North Korea, but did not elaborate further.

Kim Jong-un and Mr Pompeo held talks about President Trump's plans and future relations with North Korea.

The possibility of a summit between Kim and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is also "open", Moon said, adding: "A new order is being created on the Korean peninsula".

The U.S. Secretary of State is making one last stop before returning home.

He called on the US side to stop "groundless accusations against China and wrong actions undermining China's core interests".

Pompeo said that once they reach a conclusion to the nuclear negotiations, . they will sign a peace treaty, . and that China will be part of that process.

He earlier said "significant progress" was made during his visit toward an agreement for North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

Up to $260 billion worth of Chinese imports to the U.S. have been hit by tariffs and President Donald Trump has hinted he "could go all the way to 500", which would include all goods and products going into the country.

Another planned trip by Pompeo to Pyongyang was scrapped after what Trump said was insufficient progress towards implementing the terms of the Singapore declaration.

South Korean President Moon Jae-In thanked Pompeo for his visit and expressed his well-wishes for the potential upcoming summit.

Since Trump and Kim met in Singapore in June, US-North Korea relations have stalled.

During Mr Pompeo's last visit to Pyongyang in July, he was denounced for making "gangster-like demands".

"The United States is continuing to act against Chinese interests, including the U.S".

Specifically, Pompeo revealed that North Korea agreed to allow worldwide inspectors to survey their nuclear and missile testing sites.

On Sunday, Pompeo met Kim during a trip to Pyongyang, his fourth visit to the country this year.

The country's state newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, featured eight photos of the meeting on its front page, including various shots of Kim and Pompeo smiling and shaking hands - and some with Kim's sister Kim Yo Jong in attendance.

A key issue highlighted by one former USA official who has spoken to North Korean officials in recent months is that the definition Kim's regime has of denuclearization is far more expansive than it is for the U.S.

"I would assume there are negotiations going on over specifics - somewhere there are people meeting, " said Dean Cheng, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.
