Chicago police officer guilty of murder in black teen shooting

A jury has convicted Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke of second-degree murder in the 2014 shooting of teenager, Laquan McDonald.

In the aftermath of McDonald's death, three other police officers - including Van Dyke's partner on the night - were charged previous year with attempting to cover up the shooting, to which they pleaded not guilty.

Van Dyke faces two counts of first-degree murder, 16 counts of aggravated battery and one count of official misconduct.

The jury deliberated for over six and a half hours.

A white police officer has been convicted of murdering a black teenager after firing 16 bullets into him during a confrontation.

In particular, the video shows that the 17-year-old McDonald, who was carrying a knife on him at the time, was not walking in direction that was perpendicular to where Van Dyke was standing, not directly toward him.

Mr Van Dyke said he continued to shoot "at the knife" after Mr McDonald was on the ground, because he "just wanted him to get rid of that knife".

"If you don't have hope, you don't have anything", she said. "That video is indisputable, and if a jury doesn't see that... He made it up".

Van Dyke must serve 85 percent of whatever sentence the judge sets before being eligible for parole. Before that officer could arrive, Van Dyke opened fire and shot McDonald.

"The video is not enough", he said. Defense attorneys said Van Dyke reacted properly to the knife-wielding teen.

The officer told jurors he then shot McDonald.

The deadly encounter unfolded when officers came upon McDonald, who had a knife, and called for an officer with a Taser to respond to the scene. Of those officers, just 16 were convicted.

Gleason seized on the testimony of one the defense's own witnesses, a psychologist who interviewed Van Dyke.

Van Dyke was a late arrival to the confrontation.

Van Dyke showed little emotion as the verdicts were read out in court. They said that he stabbed the tire of a police vehicle before the shooting. "This is not the Wild West out here. where an officer can shoot an individual. and try to justify it later". Seven are white, three are Hispanic, one is Asian-American and one is African-American. Such a sentence, at Van Dyke's age, could have amounted to life.

Three other alternates were not dismissed.

The jury heard that the first police officers on the scene kept a distance from McDonald as he walked.

"It's a tragedy that could have been prevented with one simple step", he said.

Probation is an option for second-degree murder. Another juror, a black woman, said race did not factor in their deliberations in the racially charged case.

City officials and business owners beefed up security as the trial neared an end, while thousands of police officers were deployed to the streets.

The city prepared for the possiblity of widespread protests but for many of those who've been campaigning for the past four years there was celebration rather than upset. Mayor Rahm Emanuel fired the police superintendent and a Justice Department investigation found a "pervasive cover-up culture" in the Chicago Police Department, which is headed for federal reforms.
