US, Canadian and French scientists win Nobel prize for physics

"I tell my wife that's the only thing I'm really good at".

"It's kind of mind boggling, isn't it?"

In an interview with NobelPrize.org, the official website of the prize, Strickland said that when she first learned that she had won, she wondered if it might be a prank.

A woman has won the Nobel Prize in physics for the third time in the prestigious awards' 117-year history.

In 118 years of Nobel Prizes, Strickland is now only the 49th woman to be awarded one. The second female victor was Maria Goeppert-Mayer, a La Jolla resident and University of California at San Diego professor who developed the nuclear shell model of atomic nuclei.

The announcement comes a day after a senior scientist at CERN, the Geneva-based nuclear research center that is home to a number of Nobel winners, was suspended for saying that physics was invented and built by men.

"I knew he was right", she said. "It's a silly comment".

"My sense is that women often work towards the collective good and often may sacrifice their individual career for advancing the community", she said. "But certainly it isn't that women weren't able to do it".

Likewise, the Nobel Prize in economics will be declared on October 8. How ridiculous is that? "I'm honored to be one of those women". In work that formed Strickland's PhD thesis, she and Mourou took inspiration from a radar technique. "It will keep improving, hopefully". Statistics show that women earn an even smaller percentage of bachelor's degrees in physics (20%) than they do bachelor's degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields more broadly (35%).

"Well, OK. I thought there might have been more but I couldn't think". "Men have to get on board, and the majority of men are absolutely on board, so sometimes it's just inertia".

Strickland's part in the award was made in December 1985, with the publication of her doctoral dissertation while at the University of Rochester.

"Obviously we need to celebrate women physicists, because we're out there", she said. Previous news reports on his work said he retired in 1992 from the giant research complex, which later was spun off by Bell and mostly closed. "This effect is nearly like science fiction to me, to this day". "I think it's wonderful when people plow through".

Sweden's Royal Academy of Sciences said Ashkin's development of optical tweezers that can grab tiny particles such as viruses without damaging them realized "an old dream of science fiction", using the tiny amount of pressure exerted by beams of light to move objects.

But Strickland, who co-developed with Mourou "a method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses", is still an associate professor at her university, a relatively low academic rank-at least as newly minted Nobel laureates go. The resulting ultra-brief, ultra-sharp beams can be used to make extremely precise cuts and holes in a variety of materials, and have been used in surgery to correct nearsightedness in millions of people.

There were also lighter moments at Strickland's news conference, including when university president Feridun Hamdullahpur was asked whether Strickland's win was enough to vault her to the position of a full professor - he said there was a process for all to follow. It's been an excellent ride.
