Senate paves the way for Kavanaugh confirmation to the Supreme Court

As the tally neared an end, she spoke with Collins, a friend.

Collins joined Republican Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who had been undecided.

The lawyer for Christine Blasey Ford says that their client has no regrets about coming forward with her allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh's confirmation was stalled by allegations of sexual assault against him, though he looks likely to be confirmed in a final vote on Saturday.

The crucial move - known as cloture - hinged on GOP Sens. "Her goal wasn't to derail this nomination, it was to inform the nomination and she's done that".

With Republicans controlling the chamber by a narrow 51-49, Collins' "yes" vote essentially assured a minimum of 50 votes for Kavanaugh. He noted, "Unless something big changes, I don't see what would".

Committee chairman Chuck Grassley issued a statement around midnight that listed the 10 people interviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, although not all of them were named.

At that point, Murkowski came out against Kavanaugh while Flake said he would back him barring a last-minute surprise. Jeff Flake of Arizona and Democratic Sen.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein: "The most notable part of this report is what's not in it".

Murkowski and Collins sat quietly and undisturbed at their adjacent desks as a clerk called the roll.

Few of those lawmakers have held more importance than Cella's own senator, Alaska's Lisa Murkowski. Both nodded eagerly in agreement with the other.

Two-thirds of successful nominees were confirmed by at least 75% of the Senate, excluding those confirmed by a voice vote.

Trump dismissed the mostly female anti-Kavanaugh protesters - and claimed that billionaire financier George Soros, a frequent target of conservatives, was behind their demonstrations.

Kavanaugh faces multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, which have sparked a fierce, highly partisan battle over his nomination in recent weeks.

Senators had one day to review a confidential supplemental background check into Kavanaugh's behavior in the early- to mid-1980s when he was in high school and college. He has a decent sized lead in the polls against the Republican, Patrick Morrisey. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., could decide to delay the vote past Saturday if he believes he needs Daines' vote. Kavanaugh has denied all the accusations.

Ford testified last week at a dramatic Judiciary Committee hearing that when she was 15, a drunken 17-year-old Kavanaugh pinned her down, tried to remove her clothing and covered her mouth after she screamed.

"I was very emotional last Thursday, more so than I have ever been".

Besides interviewing and talking to people who know Kavanaugh, Collins said she assembled a team of 19 attorneys to assist her in examining his judicial record.

However, Democrats claimed the probe as an incomplete vetting constrained by a White House determined to push through the lifetime appointment of Trump's man. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she would spell out how she plans to vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation later Friday. In a second tweet, she cautioned that she was "not making any announcements" but was "deeply disappointed" in Collins' vote.

Lest you forgot about "boofing" and other factually dubious things Kavanaugh said at his hearing, The Late Show turned them into a drinking game.

Democrats saw something very different in the report.

Collins said the FBI investigation appeared to be thorough.
