Japan braces for 'very strong' typhoon

Jebi is the first typhoon classed as "very strong" by the country's weather agency to make landfall on Japan's main islands since a typhoon left 48 people dead or missing in 1993, Kyodo reports. Jebi, the strongest tropical cyclone to come ashore in 25 years, flooded its runways, and a tanker smashed into the road and rail bridge connecting the airport to the mainland.

The bridge reopened on Wednesday but not before around 3,000 passengers spent a night trapped in the airport.

Singapore Airlines said it has cancelled four flights: SQ622 and SQ618 from Singapore to Osaka; and SQ623 and SQ619 from Osaka to Singapore.

Jebi, or "swallow" in Korean, was briefly a super typhoon and is the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years following rains, landslides, floods and record-breaking heat that killed hundreds of people this summer.

The fast-moving storm quickly crossed the country, and by nightfall was on the verge of leaving land and heading out to sea from Ishikawa in central Japan.

Officials said two men in their 70s were killed, one when he fell from his roof in Osaka prefecture - and the other when a warehouse collapsed in Shiga prefecture, NHK public radio reported.

NHK national television said 126 people were injured in the storm.

"I've never seen such a thing", a 19-year-old man at the scene told NHK.

In the tourist magnet of Kyoto - home to ancient temples and shrines - it brought down part of the ceiling of the main railway station, while in nearby Osaka, the high winds peeled scaffolding from a multi-storey building.

Local media said more than a million households were left without power by the storm, and evacuation advisories were issued for almost 1.2 million people, though only another 16,000 were under stronger - though still not mandatory - evacuation orders. More than 135mph of the winds have attacked Japan till now and the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe has motivated the people so that they can protect themselves and their lives.

As of 8 pm, the eye of the storm was over the Sea of Japan, about 90 kilometres west of Sado Island, travelling north-north-east at 75 kilometres per hour (km/h) with maximum sustained winds of 126 km/h and gusts of 180 km/h, the agency said.

According to theguardian.com, evacuation advisories were issued for 1.19 million people, along with a stronger but non-mandatory evacuation order for a further 16,000 people, as the wind and rain began to intensify on Tuesday afternoon.

In Osaka, the Universal Studios Japan amusement park and U.S. Consulate were both closed, agencies reported.

The region came to a standstill with hundreds of flights and train services being canceled.

In July, Japan was hit by an "unprecedented heatwave" that followed devastating rain in parts of central and western Japan killing over 200 people. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains and landslides.
