Apple, Amazon deny Bloomberg report on Chinese hardware attack

Chinese hackers have reportedly implanted spying microchips in servers used by numerous data centers of such US corporate giants as Apple and Amazon, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

The report cited 17 intelligence and corporate sources, who claimed that Chinese spies had also inserted chips inside equipment used by multiple United States government agencies, which could potentially give Beijing access to internal servers.

Apple, Amazon and Super Micro have rejected Bloomberg's claims, calling them "untrue". Beijing has previously denied allegations of orchestrating cyberattacks against Western companies. The report claims Amazon became aware of the attack during moves to purchase streaming video compression firm Elemental Technologies in 2015. "Apple has never found malicious chips, "hardware manipulations" or vulnerabilities purposely planted in any server", the company said.

Three "senior insiders" claim that Apple found malicious chips on Supermicro motherboards, also in 2015, and severed its ties with the company the following year. One US official who said Thursday morning that the thrust of the article was true later expressed uncertainty about that conclusion. Apple said it did not find the chips as asserted by BusinessWeek - which cited anonymous government and corporate sources.

Once Amazon discovered the problem, it alerted the USA government, the report said.

According to the report, the tiny chips were implanted in server motherboards from Supermicro, a publicly traded company in San Jose, California, that a former U.S. intelligence official described to Bloomberg as "the Microsoft of the hardware world".

Super Micro Computer shares fell 47 per cent to $US11.20 in Pink Sheet trading. It's also untrue that AWS knew about servers containing malicious chips or modifications in data centers based in China, or that AWS worked with the FBI to investigate or provide data about malicious hardware. It said it has never found any malicious chips, has not been informed by any customer that such chips have been found, and has never been contacted by any government agencies on the matter.

Supermicro reportedly assembled server motherboards for the startup and after forensic examination, it was found that tiny chips embedded in the board were not part of the original design. Amazon reported the matter to USA authorities, who determined that the chips allowed attackers to create "a stealth doorway" into networks using those servers, the story said.

Chinese spies attempted to plant tiny microchips in the data centers of 30 major American companies, including Amazon and Apple, according to a Bloomberg investigation.

Apple was one of the victims of the apparent breach, according to Bloomberg. The FBI declined to comment for the story.

A National Security Agency spokeswoman said she had no immediate comment.

The company refutes the findings of the Bloomberg Businessweek investigation.
