Oculus Reveals New Flagship Wireless VR Headset

Oculus Reveals New Flagship Wireless VR Headset

Oculus Quest (previously codenamed Santa Cruz) is similar to the Oculus Go launched past year in that it's an entirely self-contained solution, with no need for an external device like a PC or phone.

Oculus promises that over 50 titles will be available for Quest when it launches, and VR fans can jump into the action for just $399, a price which appears to include two Oculus Touch controllers. That standalone VR headset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor with 3GB of RAM. That prompted a few skeptical groans from the Oculus Connect audience-probably because the Oculus Quest won't have as much computing power compared to the gaming PCs that run an Oculus Rift headset. The Quest also features its own audio solution, with earphones embedded into the headstrap, providing 360° audio as you game. Facebook's goal was to provide users with a completely untethered and free experience in virtual reality, combining the capabilities of the Oculus Rift with the freedom of the Oculus Go which launched earlier this year.

Oculus Quest will sit alongside the Oculus Rift and Oculus Go, offering VR experiences at several different price points. Using the cameras alone, the headset is supposedly going to be able to track up to 4,000 square feet as to allow the user to move around.

Insight also supports multi-room guardian.

Zuck also says that these three devices are also platforms, so anything built for them today will also work with new iterations in the future.

Unfortunately, during the Quest's announcement at Oculus Connect 5, Zuckerberg didn't mention what kind of internals or optics the Quest is packing. We'll believe it when we see it. Rift games won't be automatically coming to Oculus, but supposedly porting Quest games to Rift will be as simple as a one-touch button press, with no need for ports or other optimization.
