China rejects ‘unwarranted accusations’ of election meddling

Trump claimed at a United Nations Security Council meeting Wednesday that the Chinese are engaged in an active measures to disrupt the 2018 elections in retaliation for his hard-hitting tariffs.

H alleged again, "They would like to see me not win because this is the first time ever that they've been confronted on trade".

USA officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

During the 2016 election, Russian intelligence agents hacked into the email systems of the Democratic Party and its officials, secretly directed the release of the hacked material, and engaged in a social media influence campaign - all "to help President-elect Trump's election chances", according to a USA intelligence report released in January 2017.

Holding talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York, Trump said it was a "dream" of his to bring about a peaceful solution to a conflict that has eluded several of his predecessors.

China "did not and will not interfere with any country's domestic affairs", Mr. Wang said.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi also said he refused to accept any "unwarranted accusations" against China.

Amid a bitter trade war between the two countries, Trump claimed that China has been trying to influence the result as it does not want him to win.

Earlier this month, Mr Trump directed officials to impose tariffs on $200bn (£151bn) in Chinese goods, escalating a dispute over what the U.S. says are China's unfair trade practices, such as state subsidies.

Trump did not provide any evidence on Wednesday for his allegation, which he made while chairing the council meeting. The administration says China is hurting farmers and workers in pro-Trump states and districts.

Trump was speaking in front of world leaders while chairing the United Nations security council for the first time. The president has removed the US from the 2015 nuclear accord with Iran, citing the country's destabilizing actions throughout the region and support for terrorist groups like Hezbollah, and he accused its leaders on Tuesday of sowing "chaos, death and destruction".

Trump, who withdrew from the agreement, promised that USA sanctions would be "fully" in force in early November.

Trump said shortly after taking office that he'd be fine with whatever the two sides agreed to, appearing to abandon the longstanding U.S. position that the Palestinians should have their own nation.

The official was referring to China's imposition of tariffs on soybeans - a hugely important trade in the electorally crucial state of Iowa - as retaliation for Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods. He claimed that the "Syrian regime's butchery" was enabled by Iran and Russian Federation.

Nabil Abu Rdainah, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said: "The two-state solution means to us that we have a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital".

Trump sat stone-faced during the remarks, looking straight ahead.

The high-profile Security Council meeting came a day after Trump poured scorn on the "ideology of globalism" and heaped praise on his own administration's achievements in a speech to the UN General Assembly that drew head shakes and even mocking laughter from his audience of fellow world leaders.

He says he can't disclose what evidence he has, but that it will come out.

Israeli media reported that Mr Netanyahu later told journalists that he had not been surprised by Mr Trump's comments, saying: "Everyone defines the term "state" differently".

The official said China stifles free speech on US campuses and punishes or rewards businesses, think tanks, movie studios and political candidates for criticizing or supporting Chinese politics.
