‘Sexually violent predator’ Bill Cosby sentenced to 3-10 years in prison

‘Sexually violent predator’ Bill Cosby sentenced to 3-10 years in prison

He was convicted in April of aggravated sexual assault for drugging and molesting Andrea Constand at his home near Philadelphia.

In a five-page statement submitted to the court, the accuser, who resides alone with her two pups, said she has coped with anxiety for several years since the assault.

The designation comes with strict requirements, including monthly counseling and registration as a sex offender with police for the rest of his life.

Camille Cosby, Bill Cosby's wife, said in a statement that she had retained a former prosecutor to facilitate her efforts to "uncover the truth" regarding what she says is a feud between O'Neill and Castor.

A judge has told Bill Cosby that he's not entitled to bail while the 81-year-old comedian appeals his sexual assault conviction.

Cosby declined the opportunity to address the court before the judge retreated to his chambers around noon to weigh the sentence.

But as CNN reports, Bill Cosby faced a maximum sentence of 10 years after prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed to merge the three counts of his conviction into one.

The Pennsylvania Sexual Offenders Assessment Board, which reviewed Cosby's case, recommended that he be labeled a sexually violent predator.

O'Neill's pronouncement came after a protracted two-day hearing at the Montgomery County Courthouse that featured testimony from Constand, her family and psychologists. Cosby's team also argued that the sexually violent predator status was unconstitutional, but Judge O'Neill ruled against that argument on Monday. The prosecutors originally asked for five to ten years, while the defense requested house arrest based on Cosby's advancing age and a claim of being legally blind.

Sixty women have accused Cosby, 81, of rape and sexual assault over a span of time ranging from 1965 to 2008. Cosby sat back in his chair, his head on the headrest, as the sentence was read.

She testified that she took three blue pills Cosby offered her during a visit to his home outside Philadelphia in early 2004 because she trusted Cosby and believed they were some kind of an herbal relaxant.

So far, Constand's case is the only criminal case brought against Cosby, as the statute of limitations has passed on many other alleged incidents.

His prison sentence means that Cosby can apply for parole after three years.

Cosby is now free on US$1-million bail until he's sentenced, which is expected to happen Tuesday.

Cosby is the first celebrity of the #MeToo era to be sent to prison.

Cosby's first trial in 2017 ended with a hung jury.

Cosby's lawyers asked for house arrest rather than prison time, arguing that incarceration would be overly punitive given his age and physical condition.

She also wrote of Cosby: "We may never know the full extent of his double life as a sexual predator, but his decades-long reign of terror as a serial rapist is over".

Jurors convicted Cosby of sexually assaulting Andrea Constand without consent, while she was impaired and after incapacitating her. He said, "They persecuted Jesus and look what happened".
