Porsche ends diesel production for good

"We as a sports auto manufacturer, however, for whom diesel has always played a secondary role, have come to the conclusion that we would like our future to be diesel-free", he said.

With regulators now tightening emissions standards and placing extra scrutiny on diesel emissions in particular, Porsche has decided that it will no longer offer the engines. In fact, the upcoming Porsche Taycan, which is set to make its debut in 2019, will be the carmaker's first fully-electric sports vehicle. "It is, and will remain, an important propulsion technology", Blume said. "We as a sports auto manufacturer, however, for whom diesel has always played a secondary role, have come to the conclusion that we would like our future to be diesel-free", Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said in a statement.

Diesel has never been a major part of Porsche's portfolio.

It follows the emissions scandal involving parent company Volkswagen which admitted cheating emissions tests for diesel cars.

But then, diesel has only ever played a smaller role in Porsche's sports vehicle offerings, with only 12% of their worldwide portfolio consisting of diesel-fueled cars.

Porsche's existing diesel customers would continue to be served, he said. "The diesel crisis has caused us a lot of trouble", Blume said in a separate interview with weekly Bild am Sonntag. "Still, Porsche's image has suffered".

In 2017, just 12 per cent of Porsches sold worldwide were fitted with a diesel engine.

Some German cities have banned older diesel cars from their streets and the ongoing investigation into the diesel emission scandal continues. The company will introduce the Taycan model next year, the brand's first fully-electric sportscar based on the Mission E concept vehicle.
