India arrogant and negative, says Imran Khan

On Friday, the Indian government, citing "the latest brutal killings of our security personnel by Pakistan-based entities and the recent release of a series of 20 postage stamps by Pakistan glorifying a (slain) terrorist (Burhan Wani) and terrorism", had called off the meeting in NY.

Earlier, it was reported that Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan would not attend the UNGA session in order to focus his attention on the country's economy and local problems.

Late on Friday night, Pakistan's foreign ministry said it was "deeply disappointed".

"Disappointed at the arrogant & negative response by India to my call for resumption of the peace dialogue", he wrote.

It is learnt that senior officials of the PMO and the External Affairs Ministry held a meeting on Friday afternoon and took note of the nation-wide outrage over the mutilation of the body of the BSF jawan near Jammu and the abduction and killing of three J-K policemen. Separately, Indian army chief General Bipin Rawat also threatened to take launch action against Pakistan.

In response Pakistan's military spokesman said his country was "ready for war".

Criticising the Indian statement, former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Sharat Sabharwal tweeted: "IFS (Indian Foreign Service) does not draft such election oriented statements or take such hasty flip-flop decisions".

The MEA's statement had also referred to stamps issued by the Pakistan postal service that glorified Kashmiri terrorists, including Burhan Wani.

India has long accused Pakistan of arming rebel groups in Kashmir, a Himalayan territory divided between the two countries but claimed in full by both.

India on Friday cited the "brutal" killing of three policemen in Jammu and Kashmir as well as the release of the postal stamps "glorifying" Kashmiri militant Burhan Wani for calling off the meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in NY this month.

"India will have to respond to Pakistan in their own language without resorting to barbarism", Rawat told Indian media, according to Indian TV.

The reasons cited by the Indian side for cancelling the foreign ministers' meeting, within 24 hours of its public confirmation, were "entirely unconvincing", the statement said.
