North Korea’s Kim wants new summit with Trump soon to continue denuclearization

North Korea has a "serious intention" to possibly hand over a list of its nuclear warheads to the United States if Washington applies reciprocal measures in exchange for North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's determination to abandon its nuclear programs, a senior USA expert said.

Moon, South Korean first lady Kim Jung-sook, North Korean leader Kim and his wife, Ri Sol-ju, ascended Mount Paektu's highest peak, Janggun (9,003 feet), and viewed Cheonji crater lake on Thursday morning, realizing the President's long-held dream of reaching Mount Paektu's summit from the North Korean side.

Agreeing to a declaration on ending the Korean War before North Korea has reduced its offensive threat - including the thousands of artillery guns it has trained on USA ally South Korea - is opposed by many who fear that the North is maneuvering to win a withdrawal of the almost 30,000 US forces in the South.

The nuclear discussions had stalled after the first historic summit between Trump and Kim in Singapore in June, when Kim declared his backing for denuclearisation of the peninsula but no details were agreed. North Korea's two previous leaders, Kim's grandfather and father, are said to have been born in its shadow.

The South Korean leader also said he'll convey to Trump his and Kim's desire to get a declaration ending the Korean War by the end of this year.

A copy of an article of the North's official newspaper Rodong Sinmun dated December 26, 1980 calls Mount Paektu a "sacred mountain of revolution" spearheaded by Kim Il Sung "in the flames of the arduous 20-year anti-Japan struggle".

Remove 11 guard posts in the demilitarized zone by the end of the year.

There, Kim promised to allow external inspectors into his country to verify that a missile test and launch site had been permanently dismantled, and also pledged to permanently disable an important nuclear site if the United States also takes "corresponding steps".

The outcome of the Pyongyang Summit has been welcomed by US President Donald Trump. Kim's offer, however, could provide a way to jump start talks, analysts say.

However, in the meantime Moon and Kim made concrete moves of their own to reduce tensions on their border.

According to reports, the Trump administration has insisted that North Korea take a unilateral, complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation, known as CVID.

Shortly after the announcement, Trump called Wednesday's developments "very exciting" on Twitter.

At their Pyongyang summit, Moon and Kim agreed that the North Korean leader will visit Seoul "at an early date".

Talks between the US and North Korea have stalled in recent weeks after President Trump became uncertain that Kim was following through with pledges made at their Singapore summit in June.

North Korea will also take additional steps such as closing its main Yongbyon nuclear complex if the United States undertook unspecified reciprocal measures, Moon added.

"Chairman Kim Jong Un has again and again affirmed his commitment to denuclearization", Moon said after returning to Seoul.

"The fact that the leaders of Koreas can meet without limit in time or place symbolically demonstrates that a new age of inter-Korean relations has arrived", he added. The war still technically continues because it ended with a cease-fire, not a peace treaty. "Moon said that he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had agreed to measures that would completely eliminate the fear of war and the risk of armed conflicts on the Korean Peninsula".

Among possible Pyongyang demands are the permanent end to "provocative" military exercises between the US and South Korea, which North Korea says amount to invasion practice.

Mr Trump has questioned the rationale and cost of keeping 28,500 United States troops based in South Korea.
