Marion "Suge" Knight Cops Manslaughter Plea, Faces 28 Years In Prison

Marion

Knight has been locked up since January of 2015.

Former rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter on Thursday and will serve 28 years in prison for running over and killing a man three years ago. Knight was initially charged with murder and faced life in prison without parole - his sentence of 28 years stems from a plea deal struck with the District Attorney's office on Wednesday.

In 1997, he was sentenced to nine years in prison after violating his probation stemming from an earlier assault charge. One of the men, Terry Carter, died from his injuries.

During Thursday's hearing, Knight answered Judge Ronald Coen's questions, loudly and quickly saying "no contest" when the judge asked for his plea.

As part of the agreement to plead no contest to a single count of voluntary manslaughter, all other charges in the case were dropped.

Knight cracked a joke. of sorts.

The 53-year-old was a key player in the gangster rap scene that flourished in the 1990s, and his label once listed Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg among its artists. Knight, who was at the wheel, was slightly wounded himself.

According to a report in local Los Angeles new station KABC, prosecutors say Knight proceeded to follow the two men to a nearby burger restaurant, where he ran over them with his pickup truck. The Death Row founder will be credited time served for the 3 1/2 years he spent in jail leading up to his sentencing.

In addition to being injured in the Shakur slaying, Knight was shot and wounded during a party at a Miami Beach nightspot in 2005 and in 2014 at a West Hollywood nightclub.
