Trump aide says sex claim against Brett Kavanaugh should be heard

The letter, signed by 65 women who say they knew Kavanaugh in high school. insists that the judge "has behaved honorably and treated women with respect".

Trump acknowledged there could be a delay on the confirmation vote."I wish the Democrats could have done this a lot sooner because they had this information for many months ... but with all of that being said, we want to go through the process..."

"While the committee unquestionably needs to hear from both, there are other relevant witnesses who should be questioned under oath, in a public setting", the Democrats said in their letter.

Democrats are demanding that the FBI be given time to reopen its background investigation into Kavanaugh so it can check the assertions of Christine Blasey Ford, the woman accusing Kavanaugh of assault.

"Anyone who comes forward as Dr. Ford has deserves to be heard, so I will continue working on a way to hear her out in an appropriate, precedented and respectful manner", Grassley said. Ford, whose identity was unknown until Sunday, had sent a letter to Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein in July. Ford said she was able to escape only when the friend jumped on top of them.

"Any Senate Democrat, hailing from a red or blue or purple state, is wise to think deeply about how the larger cultural shifts over the past year-plus should affect their political beliefs", said Tracy Sefl, a Democratic consultant in Chicago.

Liberal senators sitting on the Senate Judiciary Committee are using this to call for a postponement of the final decision on Kavanaugh's nomination. Ford blames the therapist for not accurately recording what she said. In a statement released by the White House on Monday, Kavanaugh, 53, said he welcomed the opportunity to "refute this false allegation, from 36 years ago, and defend my integrity".

Mr Grassley had earlier stopped short of calling for a public hearing, or for delaying the committee's vote on Mr Kavanaugh which was originally planned for Thursday of this week.

According to Ford, Kavanaugh groped her and tried to take off her clothes at party when they were teenagers.

The judge and his accuser, California research psychologist Christine Blasey Ford, are to be questioned publicly on the alleged episode from their youth - although Dr. Ford has yet to confirm that she will attend.

The Kavanaugh nomination reflects the bitter partisanship of the age - and the notion, which occasionally flares in high-court confirmation battles, that political views rather than simply a nominee's qualifications should be factors that senators should consider. Democrats are demanding a thorough investigation by the FBI, because these allegations are new.

Ford initially declined to come forward. All 11 Republicans on the committee are men.

The hearing represents a potential make-or-break moment for the conservative federal appeals court judge's confirmation chances for the lifetime post on the top US court, as Trump seeks to continue his goal of moving the federal judiciary to the right.

Kavanaugh was seen Monday morning arriving at the White House, which has stood by the judge in the face of the accusations.

Judiciary Chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) has set a hearing date for early next week to decipher the allegation. They didn't even ask Ford if she'd be available to testify then. The statement seemed to suggest that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was not now investigating.

The letter's contents leaked last week and Ms Ford identified herself in an interview with the Washington Post published on Sunday that included details about the alleged assault.

Kavanaugh is now a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, widely viewed as the nation's second-most-powerful court.
