US Border Patrol Agent Charged With Murdering 4 in Killing Spree

35 year old Juan David Ortiz was charged Saturday afternoon in Laredo Texas.

Ortiz, a 10-year Border Patrol veteran, was arrested early on Saturday after a fifth woman who had been abducted managed to escape and notify authorities.

According to Alaniz, authorities plan to charge Ortiz with aggravated kidnapping and murder.

He was jailed on US$2.5 million bond.

On Friday, Ortiz told police he picked up a fifth woman, Erika Pena.

When they arrived at the location, Ramirez got out of the vehicle to urinate, at which point Ortiz used a handgun to shoot her multiple times in the head before driving away, according to the affidavit.

She made it to a gas station where she found a state trooper who she asked for help.

‘Serial killer’ US Border agent suspected of killing prostitutes

He was found at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday hiding in a pickup truck at a hotel parking garage, according to the affidavit.

He produced a gun in response and grabbed hold of her shirt. Luera was found alive and died of her wounds at a hospital. Authorities didn't disclose the victims' names or nationalities and they declined to discuss the evidence or say how the women were killed. The victim was able to provide a detailed description of Ortiz, including his tattoos, Alaniz said.

Ortiz had worked for the agency for 10 years, the wire service reported.

According to a police affidavit, Ortiz said he killed Ramirez, a mother of two, the previous day. The border city about 145 miles (235 kilometers) southwest of San Antonio. Alaniz said two of them were US citizens but the nationalities of the other two were not yet known. Chapa told reporters that the police are not ruling out the possibility of finding more victims in the days to come, and Webb County District Attorney Isidro R. "Chilo" Alaniz said that he feels comfortable describing Ortiz as a serial killer.

Andrew Meehan, a spokesman for Customs and Border Protection, said the government is fully cooperating with local Texas authorities.

The Texas Department of Public Safety, whose Texas Rangers are investigating, did not return several messages seeking comment.

Prostitutes are frequently targeted by serial killers due to their itinerant lifestyle and fear of the police, which makes them are less likely to be reported missing and seek help from law enforcement. Those two individuals were only identified in the affidavit as "Jane Doe" and "John Doe", but both had been shot to death.
