Cleveland Browns trade Josh Gordon to New England Patriots

He's also a restricted free agent next season, which could give the 49ers the opportunity to pursue him with their ample salary cap space if he performs well in New England. In a statement released prior to training camp, Gordon revealed he was "doing great" both physically and mentally, and "excited to start the season".

The Browns announced Saturday that they would release Gordon on Monday.

The Browns had felt they had reached their breaking point with Gordon - after sticking with him through multiple suspensions stemming from substance abuse issues.

Gordon has been suspended for a total of 56 games in his seven NFL seasons, 55 of which were league bans for positive drug and alcohol tests. The Patriots have always had receivers with a high football IQ, but Gordon doesn't fit that bill, so this is an interesting move. The Patriots coach will try to work the same magic with Gordon, a 6ft 3in, 225lb wideout with a dazzling blend of size and speed. That year, Gordon caught 87 passes for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns in just 14 games. He had a memorable 80-yard TD catch against the Patriots, turning a short catch into an electrifying run on which he made New England's defenders appear to be standing still. In 2013, he became one of the best receivers on the planet.

In the six years since Gordon was taken in the second round of the supplemental draft he has played in just 41 games. "We see what he does when he's on the field".

Last week, Gordon found himself in more trouble.
